Default Road Glide history??????

Been druling over a vivid black 07 RG at my local dealer lately. The 08s will be out soon. Trying to decide weither to wait for the 08s or work out a deal on the 07, decisions, decisions, etc.
Anyway,
Does anyone know the history of these awesome bikes? When did the MoCo start with the frame mounted fairing? Were there different shapes to the fairing over the years. Whats the history on these babys?

Thanks,
Doug

The Road Glide was introduced in 1998 and had replaced the Tour Glide (A.K.A Robber Glide) which was the other frame-mount fairing in the line-up. Early Tour Glides had an enclosed chain final drive, the concept was valid (low maintenance) but it took all day to change the rear tire. The Tour Glides were never very popular, which is why HD never really pursued the Gold Wing/LT/Voyager/Cavalcade luxo-tour market. The Electra-Glide Ultra Classic's supply never exceeded demand. In the Easy Rider magazine's 1996 Buyer's Guide preview, the editor had mentioned a sneak peek at a new fairing that was rumored to be fitted to a Road King. That was the birth of the Road Glide and the "Shark-Nose" fairing. The fairing had been repositioned after the first few years, which is why newer ones appear a little different. There are custom built V-rods with the Roadie fairing installed, I wouldn't be surprised to see Kansas City churning some out next year.

Wow. Very well done. I'm impressed!

One more question... Was the Tour Glide based on the FXR chassis?

yes and No, it was an FL chassis with rubber engine mounts. But back in the shovelhead days, FL's and FX's used the same frames. The original FX was an XL front fitted to an FL frame.

I have always had black bikes. The Roadie might have to be something different. I cant wait to see the differend colors that will be offered, or any small tweeks Im sure the MoCo will do. I am leaning tword waiting for the 08s since my dealer is strictly MSRP.
cihabate: Excellent info, thank you,
Doug

No. The Tour Glide was born in 1980 and was the first rubber mounted, 5 speed big twin.
The FLH and FLT frames from 1980 on are two different animals. The FLTwas so far ahead
of it's time it's still not considered cool even to this day

HMMM, drooling over a Black 07 Road Glide. Seems to create some flashbacks for me. Not good at history but I owned a 1992 Ultra Tour Glide. That was one sweet bike. Stolen with 11K miles and never recovered.
