Manual calls for "SPECIAL PURPOSE GREASE" on steering head bearings, I already have a tube of regular grease in my gun.
Anybody see any issues with using this, or do I have to find my special purpose (not THAT special purpose)?
Use a high temp disc brake wheel bearing grease. I wont melt all over your fender when it is hot out. To properly lube top and bottom bearings wrap a cord around the lower joint (where the grease runs out when hot).
Grease it till the grease comes out the top, now both bearings have grease. Remove cord, and if you used the above grease you wont have any meltdowns.
It should be on the left side of the neck (from sitting position). You may have a plug there instead of a zerk, in which you would have to install a zerk to grease. I had to get an angle head on the grease gun to fit in there with the inner fairing in the way.
I use the Red n Tacky grease and that runs. Not as much as regular grease but it still does.
Maybe I'll try that disc brake/wheel bearing grease next time around.
HDV Glide,
Some of that red tacky grease contains a waxy base. So in that Southern heat Id imagine the candles would melt lol.
We had an fleet issue years ago where wheel bearings and u joints were failing. I found that someone ordered reg chassis grease that was waxy and tacky. No more problems with Hi temp stuff, that was about 20M miles ago now.
