Go to your local dealership, or a Bike night, and listen to all the Bikes.
When you hear the one that sounds to your liking, ask the owner what
he has on his Bike. Most owners love to talk about their Bikes and will
tell you what they have done to it.
I have VH Twin Slash Round Slip ons. Part 16763. I guess I'm judging based on how it sounds when I'm riding. I'm comparing to the sound I get on my sportster wth VH slip ons as Well.
I have a stock 110 engine in a '13 CVO Ultra with Rinehart XT True Duals w/4" mufflers and standard baffles.
My friend has a '10 Ultra (upped to a 103) has the same exhaust as I and his bike (from the rear) sounds much louder than mine, but when we switch bikes, mine sounds louder than his!
Another issue with "loud" is on longer trips and especially so when you choose to wear a full face or a modular helmet. The "noise" can drive you nuts after a few hours so be careful of how much noise you buy 'cause you may have to ride and live with it for a while.

Sound is subjective, but I think the Evo has a much better sound than a big twin. I love the way my street glide sounds, but the sportster I had years ago sounded amazing.
