2wheelin your a man that won't give up and loves to ride and I admire that. I feel your pain I also suffered from 2 herniated disk along with the sciatic nerve that would numb my right leg down to my knee. I was fortunate enough that PT worked for me at this point but I do get flare ups at times.

I had the same issue. Went to physical therapy and others for a year, then went to a surgeon, they did a fusion in an out-patient setting. Four small incisions and I walked out and no more pain or issues. Been almost five years ago. All my therapy doctors told me surgery is too risky...but now I know it was all a scam to keep me in pain and therapy.

I have never heard of outpatient fusion, please explain
It's a popular treatment here in south Florida. Minimal Invasive Surgery. I had an L-5, S-1 Fusion performed as an outpatient. Went in at 9:00 a.m. and was out at 2:00 p.m. Three days of bed rest and I was up and moving. No more pain. Of course, everyone is different, but in my case, it was something I should on done from the beginning.
Well done and congrats from another sufferer. Funny that most people don't understand that "Riding" doesn't hurt or aggravate the back (at least for me and I am assuming OP). It is everything else that causes you trouble. Just did 2200 miles in 10 days, zero pain. But shovel some damn snow (yeh I said it) and I am in the bed for a week. Good luck!!
I had stenosis between L-4 and L-5 in '13 and couldn't walk without a cane. 30 minute surgery on Monday and I was deer hunting on Saturday. I wish your fix was that easy, but perhaps you can get some relief. Not all back surgery is bad...
Back in January I had an A.L.I.F procedure done by Dr. McConnell in Allentown. Basically, he removed the entire disc between L5 and S1, replaced it with a carbon fiber disc and a bone graft (calcium phosphate), and fused the two vertebrae with the plate and screws seen in the picture.
Instant relief!!! The leg pain was gone, but the recovery takes time. He cut me open from the front, pushed my guts out of the way, did his business and sewed me up. Hey, I can still wear a Speedo with the incision so low on my abdomen.
I had to take it easy for 4-5 months; just LOTS of walking. Adjust how I slept and limited twisting at the waist for a month or so. Only missed 3 weeks of work (HS math/science teacher). I am SO pleased. In fact, with every monthly follow up visit I try to give him a bro-hug and he just gives me that look and leans away.
Same problem as you with my left leg. Have to carry a fold up cane in my saddle bags. After numerous doctor visits,MRI's,C-Scans,etc,I decided to buy a inversion chair to decompress my spine where sciatic nerve is pinched from bulging discs. It has done wonders and a lot cheaper than visits to the chiropractor or to the back specialist who wants to do surgery.
