2010 road king with vh slipons. no windshield and full face with earplugs is fine. windshield with above will turn brain to mush, serious bass pounding, but with no helmet and earplugs is fine. I have a feeling that the helmet is 'tuned' to the exhaust tone, anything that can be done to helmet?
You need to fur coat your helmet in order to reduce the resonance factor.
Make sure to post a photo of yourself after doing so.
Serious question, have you tried a different/friend's helmet to test it?
I 'tuned' the height of my shield and it made a world of a difference. Can't remember how much but only 1" or 2". They come in different heights too. Try and find someone with a lower one. The higher one I found I was having to look around a corner off it to avoid buffeting. If you are careful, you can trim them. Or buy a cheapo used one off Ebay to hack about with until you find your optimum.
I have a modular that does that when closed. Not bass pounding, more like a drone.... or a buzz way down in my ear drums. I need to experiment with filling up the ear cavities in the helmet... there's a void in there where speakers could go, I think it's the culprit.

Probably air buffeting, not an exhaust issue. A change in windshield or helmet will probably mitigate it.
Indeed, probably wind buffeting when you add a windshield instead of the even flow of air without the windshield.
Before you change helmets or windshield do a search on this forum for "buffeting". On my bike just adding "fangs" got rid of most of the buffeting.

Exhaust noise gets left behind in my experience, once doing a decent highway speed, so I agree with helmet choice and different plugs.
In fact plugs that are not fully inserted or a good fit will actually cause annoying side effects, something I realised when I discovered I have one ear canal significantly larger in ID than the other. I got around that by buying a mixed selection of different brands and models of plugs, from an on-line specialist retailer. More recently I've been using Auritech plugs, also sold as Nonoise, and am delighted with them. They cope well with my different ear-holes!
As for a helmet, find a decent supplier who has a trained fitter. When Mrs B and I last bought new helmets we had that good luck and came away with snug-fitting good quality helmets. With them and our plugs we are both very pleased with our comfort while riding. We can even hear each other over our blue-tooth communicators! Another benefit is that the fitter was drop-dead gorgeous.....sigh!
