Default RE: Lowering a Road King?

Are there any inherent problems with the 2001 RK that I should know about B4 going to look at it seriously again this weekend, and are 32000kms alot of mileage on that engine or should I expect alots more service life from it? Thanks all.

Another thing to consider when lowering your King is lean angle clearance. I have a 2004 FLHRS (RK Custom), which comes stock with the lowering kit others have mentioned - it drops the lower shock mount off the back of the swingarm. But in doing so, it also reduces cornering clearance. Yet if you look at the specs, the clearance angles are the same for the Custom as for the other, non-lowered Kings. So how'd they do that??

As near as I can tell, the answer is in the Custom's floorboards - they are narrower than the normal ones, which gives you a little more lean angle before they start dragging (actually it's usually the kickstand on the left side).

If you are concerned about lean angle clearance after you've lowered your bike, might be something to check out.

i tried the low profile shocks, thought they rode like a tank. then i went tj lowering kit with the stock shocks and a low profile seat and all is good with the world.

That 15999 price was canadian - so that equals about 14975 at today's exchange rate.

Additionally, the mileage was 32000kms which equals about 19883 miles.

Is it a good price? Maybe. Is it completely stock? Hopefully it has a few things already - like pipes/tuner/air cleaner - and a bit of chrome or an extra or two like a sissybar, better seat, luggage rack, etc...the price "sounds" like a reasonable request - but if its pretty bare bones - I would try to get it down another grand or two.

As for concerns - you'll hear about people complaining of possible "wobble" in turns - which I think is very unique to a particular bike - and not widespread amongst all RK's or touring bikes for that matter. I have no wobble.Do check the front motor mount to make sure its in good shape. Oil drips on'em during oil changes and causes them to wear faster. Replacement mounts are about $120USD and pretty easy to replace. I haven't had to replace mine on my 01 RK - and I'm up to 10,000 miles now (bought it a couple months ago @ 5,000 miles). I paid 11,500USD for it & it had custom paint, handebars and a little bit of chrome. I put about $3,000 into it so far with pipes/tuner/aircleaner/seat/HD flame accessories (pegs/boards/grips)/mirrors and a bunch of other little things.

Also - check to make sure the handlebars are "solid". My riser bushings were shot - the stock ones are junk. HD sells poly ones for $34USD and its a 20 minute job to replace them. I knew they were bad because when sitting on the bike, I could wiggle the bars forward and back - there was a lot of play.

The only other thing I can think of is the fuel injection system, if its injected (should be, right?). 01 was the last year for the MM setup - due to performance issues. Nothing major, but I know when my bike get's really hot - it drops in performance due to the sytem sensors not behaving as one would hope. Apparently, they put a temp sensor on this unit in a bad place, so it gives readings that don't make for best performance in hot conditions. I think there may be a thread here on HD forums that explains it. There are aftermarket kits for around $400 to upgrade the system - and one day, I may get it - as well as rebuilt the motor to bigger specs

All in all - I LOVE my 01 RK. L O V E I T. I will never part with this bike - even when I want to get another bike. It will always be a fixture in my life on some level Hope some of the info helps!

Yes the price is in Canadian dollars, the mileage is in kilometers, the bike is bone stock (no extras)and if I remember correctly it has FI. It appears to be in good shape....apparently the previous owner traded it at the dealership it's at now for a new Electra Glide.
I am relatively new to H-D only having the Sporty for a couple of years but now I find it too small for the bothmyself and wifeyso that's why I was leaning towards a RK. From your answer there doesn't seem to be many negative issues with the '01 RK so that's reassuring to know also. Price wise in CAD$$, what do you think a reasonable selling price (dealer)should be for it? Tks.

Forgot to mention, I'll be trading my '03 883 with about 2 Grand worth of accessories in on the RK if the RK's still available.

the accessories won't get you squate in trade. take off as much as you can and sell them on ebay, or swap pages, or anywhere else. hell, trade someone for the stock part if you have to, i like to help others out before i help the dealer. he makes a lot more than people i know.
