i hope the bell you swapped with oldfartjc wasn't a used one off of your bike! they are locked to the VIN of your bike, and you have to take them down to the dealer to have a computer recalibration done. i you don't do this, it will cause overheating, noise in the transmission, running lean and void your warranty. plus if it didn't originally come from HD, it may not be EPA compliant and big brother will come hunting both of you down!
it was alright to swap mine from my old bike. i never registered the bell with yamaha, so they had no clue. plus i dont think japan can track this old tech stuff. i cant imagine the high tech bells they must have.

The stealer took mine off when they installed the oil cooler and never put it back on. I sent them a nasty e-mail and now I have $25 in credit

Back in the day, Gaurdian bells, or gremlin bells, were used on scoots to alert the owners if someone touched their bike. An early alarm system. Each bell has a distinct sound, that when rang, told the biker that someone had moved their bike.

Now a days, most attach a bell to keep gremlins from f*ing up your scoot or ride. It may be a psychological thing, but most (including myself) swear by them. You must receive it as a gift. It will not 'work' if you purchase it yourself. My in laws (lifer wing riders), gave me mine just after I bought my bike. Say what you will, but a year later, I have had no uncommon issues. May be luck, or the bell. BUT, the bell stays on.
