If i am not mistaken, and i could be very wrong here, but i thought at one time my '14 Ultra Classic started in gear with the clutch engaged. Now it only starts in neutral. That's it. Am i recalling something that didn't happen? And if it should start in gear as long as the clutch is engaged, and it isn't, what could be the issue?
Thanks to all

Neutral safety switch could be pooched. It should start in gear as long as you have the clutch lever pulled in

Bike should start if in neutral and/or if the clutch is pulled in. Either or both. If it only starts in neutral, something is wrong. As suggested above, start with the Neutral switch.

Does your gear indicator still work? If not then your left switchpack is bad. Some (myself included) have been able to flood that switch housing with WD-40 and get it working again. Seems that water gets into the switch housing and corrosion kills it. If the gear indicator is working however its related to the neutral switch.

Just went through this when I decided to install the lighted switch packs. Found out that the switch packs i bought and installed were defective for a number of reasons, main reason was they did not light all the switches and second the bike did not start in gear with clutch pulled in. While installing the new replacement packs all went back to normal. The bike should start in gear with the clutch pulled in. If clutch is not pulled in, the bike will not start in gear. Switch pack might be the issue, which houses the neutral safety switch. As a side note, when replacing the switch packs, make sure the wires are not pinched. They are very thin!

Check this link, if it works... there's a picture that shows the actual switch, it is easy to see. See if yours is popping all the way out when you pull your clutch in. If the switch got stuck in, the bike won't start in gear. I don't think it is a part of the "switch pack" but it is housed in the back of the clamshells that the switch pack is in, and when putting them back on you have to be sure this switch seats right and doesn't get hung up or catch on the housing. its easy enough to verify and be able to check it off the list if it is not the problem. When clutch lever is released the button is pressed down, when you pull in the clutch lever the lever moves and the button extends out. https://www.hdforums.com/forum/new-r...l#post16686011

It was indeed the switch pack. Thanks to each and every one that responded. The part was over $200 plus $109 to install. Thank goodness i had the Extended Service Plan still in play. Cost me $50.
I had a service tech tell me once that the only thing the forums are good for is to scare us from riding our bikes.
