Hip replacement
I finally got the hip replacement on 6-1-07. Tomorrow it will be 2 weeks, and I can walk without even a cane. I can't wait to see the Dr. tomorrow to see when I can ride again. I could have put the surgery off a couple of years, but then I would not have been able to ride at all. I can't beleive the difference already. Should have done this a long time ago. Better late than never. I can't even imagine riding without pain.
I had my left hip replaced in Jan 2006 and took a 4000 mile bike trip in June. Was walking , like you, within a few weeks after surgery.
Had the right knee replaced in late Jan 2007 and have been riding since early April. The knee takes a little longer to re-hab than the hip---but no problem riding.
I now slightly limp--- equally on each side!!
I suspect that you will ride more and enjoy it more now that your hip is fixed.

i had mine replaced in november....i dont limp...i can put on my socks...i can even do sidekicks again...AND i dont havta pick my leg up with my hand to put it on the board anymore....good for you....personally, it took me a month to go without a cane completely
I have that fancy device to help with the socks. Before the surgery I rode from So. CA to Scottdale AZ for bike week. 6 hours. Only a fellow THR person could possibly know what that was like. That made up my mind to go through with it. I'm scheduled at the end of the year for the left hip. Meanwhile I will have 4 months of riding till then.
Its good to hear all the positive results on your replacements. I'm facing the same on my left hip, almost to the point that Bryan was, picking up leg with left hand. I'm only 51 thought and both surgeons that I saw want me to wait as long as I can, sure makes riding tough though!!
Did you all have the traditional replacement or did any of you have the resurfacing?

I lost my right kneecap from a bike accident when I was 19 and in the Navy. Eleven weeks in Sick Bay. First day they let me out for a short home leave, I rode back on another bike. That did not go over well. That was 37 years ago. Walking ok, but can't do it Doggy Style.

find a doc who does the minimal invasive procedure...my scar is only 2-3 inches long....the joint is titanium/titanium....my doc showed me the stuff before the surgery....occasionally i feel the shaft of the new ball joint inside my femur...advil works good now and i dont havta take 10 or so a day anymore
I was sixty-two when I had mine replaced. I couldn’t ride more than a half hour and needed a cane to get around. I was also having problems at the gym. I had my surgery at 8:00 am on a Monday and went home on Thursday morning. I used the cane for several days to walk around the neighborhood and by the end of the first week out of the hospital didn’t need the cane anymore. My doctor said maybe the bike after the 6th week check up. I rode my bike at the 4th week even though I couldn’t drive my car, right hip. Just had my 64th birthday and will be going to Sturgis in August. It’s great to be able to put your socks on and tie your own shoes. God bless titanium and plastic.
