Guess I should of had my hip replaced instead of breaking my foot. Like I had a choice. Glad you get to ride soon, I have til the 29th before I find out if I can walk on my foot. Bike probablly won't run when I get around to being able. It's probablly thinking I'll teach him.

I am a mere 35 (recently). To date, no problem with my hips or knees. BUT, I have back pain everyday. It is surely my fault. I have lived a hard 35 and weigh 350'ish lbs. The doc has me going to therapy and on muscle relaxers (baclofen)and 30 mg of Hydrocodone a day. Along with my allergy pills and ibuprophen, I carry a butt load of drugs around with me. At work, I am the drug guy. Not as bad as a couple others. One guy, in his forties, is on 17 meds a day. Including methadone. That is some stiff stuff. I am a craps dealer at a casino and bend over the craps and blackjack tables for a ten hour shift. Takes me like four hours a night at hometo be comfortable enough to get to sleep.

If I am having these issues at 35, I don't want to know what lies ahead of me. I have lost a few pounds due to not drinking (on to many meds to drink), but really got to get off my butt and hit the gym. But, being in pain everyday, makes it hard to want to workout.

Hope you get back to riding soon.

Way to go, Fly Fast....glad to hear you're doing well!
Hip replacements are not as scary as they used to be, and the heal time is much faster.
A client of mine with severe cartilage degenerative disease had a radical hip replacement last year, after putting it off for three years and living in agony as a near-cripple all that time....now he's walking around just fine, working out, climbing stairs, etc.

Papa Travis...sorry to hear about your back pain. I have chronic severe nerve pain in my lower back, from years of doing massage therapy plus having a fibromyalgia condition. I know the agony of trying to wait out the pain to go to sleep. There was a time when I took hydrocodone for it, but, it didn't actually help after a while. That was in my "pre-Bill-W" days, nowadays I don't take anything stronger than Aleve.
But I recently pulled off about 15 lbs and was amazed at the difference it made in my back pain. Plus, I've been doing some abdominal exercises to strengthen the core abs and hip adductors, increased my daily calcium intake to 100 mg, and I wear a back brace whenever I'm going to be on my feet for any length of time....all in all my back is muuuuch better.

Well, in the last year with the elimination of booze, alone, I have dropped 35 lbs. Wonder what I could have done if I had actually tried to loose weight. I am more out of shape than I have ever been. I am a Marine, 15 years out. And, I once taught aerobics and weight training at UNM. I am type "A", and once I get on something, Iobsess over it. But being a friend of Bill, you understand that, I am sure. In those days, I was working out no less than three times a day. Now, with the family and all, I don't know if I could do that. I will figure it out. Just a matter of time until I get sick of my weight.Glad you are feeling good. And, you sure look good.[:-]

Its good to hear all the positive results on your replacements.
It's not just good it's GREAT to hear all of these positive results regarding replacements. I was born with a dislocated left hip and was told by an orthopedic surgeonwhen I was 10 that I would be in wheel chair by the time I was 40. Of course when I was 10, hip replacement surgery wasn't available. I'm 56 years old, have been very fortunate hip replacement hasn't, as yet, been required. I appreciate every day I get up.

Good health and developments in modern medicine are two things that should never be taken for granted.

Ride safely.

My orthopedic surgeon told be a couple of weeks ago to come back to see him when the pain became too much for me. I've done a little research on the internet about hip replacement. It's looking like I might do it this winter. I've got my deductible paid our for this year (health insurance) so it would be better to do it soon. The only difference between me and the rest of you that have had the surgery is that I am a left leg, above knee, amputee. It's the right hip that needs replaced, it's been doing double duty for 38 (I'm 61, early middle age!)years so I guess it's time. My real concern is being able to do the therapy. The Dr. did mention a new, larger, metal to metal hip that he thought would work well for me considering how active I am. Anyway it is reassuring to read about how well you guys with the hip replacement are doing. Thanks for the info.

Glad to hear you are having a quick recovery! July 18th is the magic day for replacement of the left hip for me. I went to one saw bone and he said that I should wait as long as I can because it would need replaced again in 15 years. But he wouldn't do it because of a previous accident that I had in 73 that caused the excessive wear on the hip in the 1st place. I went to a hip specialist, (no he is not Hip as in cool) and he is going to hook me up with the screaming eagle parts that are good forlife. It is interesting to hear the other techniques that are being used. The ball and cup of the screaming eagle version is made of ceramic attached to titanium and will be adjustable on installation to compensate for the short left femur that I was left with after the accident in 73. I will be so looking forward to the relieffrom the pain in the butt that is almost constant now. Keep us posted on your progress because your speedy recovery is inspiration to myself anyway! Oh by the way I hit 50 in January of this year.

I've had my right hip replaced twice. The first time was back in 90, and a revision, about 3 years ago. It's great, I was only in the hospital for 3 days, and in a month I was back at band practice. And best of all my insurance paid fer the whole thang..

Bad thing is, my left hip needs an overhaul too...I keep putting it off, but I've got to get it done soon...and it's got to be in Winter, so I can ride by spring...[8D]

ORIGINAL: Fly Fast

I finally got the hip replacement on 6-1-07. Tomorrow it will be 2 weeks, and I can walk without even a cane. I can't wait to see the Dr. tomorrow to see when I can ride again. I could have put the surgery off a couple of years, but then I would not have been able to ride at all. I can't beleive the difference already. Should have done this a long time ago. Better late than never. I can't even imagine riding without pain.
You're tough.

Got knocked off my bike at MB Bikeweek in 06. Surgery (Heige pin) on my shattered clavicle 5 days later. It didn't take so in early March it got a plate and screws. Took three plugs of bone from my hip for the graft. The clavicle didn't hurt much. 10 days later my hip was really hurting. 15 days later I couldn't walk nor pick up my foot off the ground.

Seems its normal for everything to flare up. A 7 day prednisone pack and another month and I was almost back to normal as far as the hip goes.

Now if the shoulder will just heal.
