Hope I can make this make sense. I just purchased a 2002 Electric Glide with a Screamin Eagle 6 speed transmission. When I'm in 3rd, 4th, and 6th gear there is a whinning sound, especially in 6th gear. 6th gear is especially loud. I can't tell if it's actually comming from the trans or in the primary area. Sense it only does it in these three gears I kind of assumed that it may be the trans. After reading some of the other postings I'm now wondering if it may be the primary. Anyone else experienced this problem or have any ideas?
I have a SE 6-speed in my '05 FLHTCI. Almost 8k miles on it and all trouble free. No strange noises at all.
I would suggest an overly tight primary chain. The main drive belt should be checked as well.
I once rode a FLHT with a belt that was as tight as a bow string. It set up a terrible whine from the trans.
The SE box (actually JIMS) is strong stuff. I'd be surprised if the noise was impending trans failure.
I would dump the fluid & put in fresh gear oil also, I had a custom softail 6 spd trans that had 20/50 in it that did a similar symptom until I ran the correct gear oil in it.
"orcas tow"....hello!
You live on a beautiful island. When we were into boating, we spent many vacations at the Rosario marina.
One of these days we need to ride the Harley around lovely Orcas.
Best Wishes!
