Actually, new front tire tread depth is 5/32" & new rear tire tread depth is 10/32" so I would suggest both are wearing evenly (1/5 of total new tread depth used on both front & rear) so when you're closer to replacement time, you'll probably be looking at replacing both at the same time.
With the wear I've experienced with stock Dunlops you should have at least 10K miles left before replacement is needed. I've been averaging ~15K per set with the back wearing out before the front. How many miles have you put on the bike. The dealer replaced the tires before you bought if it you have 12K on the bike and the front is at 4/32.

what are you figuring is high dollar? compared to the stock tires, you can buy a complete set of the american elites for about the same cost as one rear stock tire.

about equal to the cost of the michelin commander 2s.

and the same for the metzler 888s.

I've been running Commander 2 and I like em. A riding buddy who is a really big guy has been riding Pirelli and really likes them. Perhaps less mileage than you are looking for but for me worth a try. I am not a big guy.

Yes, I am going to call the dealer’s service department to find when the tires were replaced.

When I bought my Avon’s they were all in the same ballpark unless someone had a rebate going. Avon or elites is where I go

Now that begs the question: do dealers upcharge in any way when you bring your own tires? I am naive with regard to HD-I come from Japanese bikes.
Some dealers will not install customer purchased parts, only parts purchased through them. I found out this summer when I bought tires online and went to the closest dealer - absolutely no customer purchased parts. I called another dealer about 30 minutes away and the service guy said bring them in tomorrow (Saturday) morning and we will get you taken care of, no issue whatsoever.

This spring I purchased the Michelin Commander II front and rear at 17,500 miles on the original Dunlops. They were about the same price as the Dunlop American Elites, and a little higher than the Metzeler 888s. The rear was down to the wear bars, and the front maybe could have gone a couple thousand miles, but I like to replace in sets. I am happy with them so far, with about 6000 miles so far. I purchased them based on reviews and the claims of higher mileage. No issues with traction or riding in wet weather, but I ride fairly conservatively, with a mix of local rides, commuting, and long road trips.

I don't play guitar, but Smith and Wesson.

I venture to say many of us buy our tires online and have them put on at an Indy shop as opposed to a HD service department. Getting the best bang for the buck, saving money being the driving factor. You coming from metric bikes may even find one of those shops cheaper but it pays to get in with an Indy that works on HD exclusively.
