Default Lights on an EGC tour pack

Im thinking of putting the lights that are on the ultra tour pack on my classic tour pack. My questionsare has anyone done this and how hard is it to add the tour pack lights. I have decidedthat the tour pack is so useful Ill never take it off.

I have the lights on mine, but I didn't install them myself. I had the dealer do mine because it requires drilling holes in the Tour Pack, and if it got screwed up they'd be responsible.

If you can get by an HD store, ask the parts guy to print out the installation instructions for the kit and see what you think about doing it yourself. Someone just did one on the forum and a search within the past 60 days should turn it up for you. The guy did it without difficulty.

My box, purchased on ebay came with that Ultra bar, but I had the plastic portion painted to match the bike color (birch white, no pinstripes), and I added the HD spoiler/LED on the lid.

I did my own brake light kit in my tour pak,my dealer wanted $245.00 to do the install of the light kit. I was a nervous wreak doing it,measured a bunch of times, after i drilled the first 1/2" hole into the tour pak,I settled down and got into the whole prodject.
I found the pattern to be very easy to line up and trace,,stayed within the marked lines and did the cutting with a fine tooth hack saw blade, once i finished cutting out the first opening,I block sanded the remaining material down to the line,My light kit fit into the opening "perfectly" and it took me 2.5 hrs start to finish to do the whole job(that included standing back looking at it having a few beers though out the 2.5 hrs)
The only thing i would suggest is setting the tour pak aside for a few days after doing the light kit,to allow the silicone sealer time to loose the strong smell.

This was the first major job i did myself, and i'm proud to say i did it myself!

PS the dealer service guys looked it all over and said i did a very nice job! they even removed the liner to see how it looked inside. couldnt find a thing wrong with it besides they didnt get $245.00 from me

Mike

I installed the side lights on my 2007 FLHTC. Also, I went to http://www.hoglite.com. I simply love this LED brake light bar. I highly recommend this product.

Yeah, I wimped out too. The thing that got me nervous was the paper template included in the kit. The way it is to be located on the tour pack prior to cuttinglooked kind of vague to me. Maybe I'm just dense, but that's the way it seemed. It's not just holes to drill, but cutting wide slots around the rear corners of the tour pack for the light fixture to fit into. Screw that up and it's $600 for a new tour pack. Anyway, I'm glad I have them on the bike now. Alot more visible to the cages behind me, although that is still no guarantee against getting rear-ended.

Its not that difficult. Its not like building a ICBM or starting a computer on the space station.

All you have to do is be careful and plan it out and it can be done. I'd think the job could be done by anyone with a ruler and some shop tools.

I just went to my dealer today and the kid behind the counter printed out the instructions for the install. It is doable-I have them right here. But not easy.It suggests using a fine tooth hacksaw. I intended to use the dremmel mototool but it warns against it saying it might blister or burn something. Honestly I don't think its worth taking a chance unless your very good at this type of thing. I thing the 200+ dollar spolier with the LED running and brake light will increase visibilty very close to that of the ultra light set up and that spoiler has to be worlds easier to install. My wife was going to buy me either one today as a beleated fathers day gift. I passed on both and instead got 100 dollars of chrome dodads and she ordered me the 9 inch windshield too. I still want more rear lighting though. People sometimes tailgate and stop too close but I dont think any amount of lights will stop some of these stupid fockers from doing that. Most of them think itsokay. They see nothing wrong with it, guys like us think we need more lights but the truth is the amount of lights isn't the issue-the lack of road respect is thereal issue- extra lights or not.

Hogdad: I rode behind a friend's Road Glide with a King TP mounted on a two-up HD detachable rack for a good bit of an all day ride recently. IMHO, that OEM brake/tailight is woefully inadequate in providing lighting to the rear of a touring bike. Perhaps that OEM only tailight on the back of your bike is a contributing factor to the cagers getting so close to you.

If you haven't done so already, consider the HD brake/turn/running light module for your bike. It will turn those large unlit pancake turn signals into bright light while braking and running lights otherwise. I have this on my bike and am regularly told by guys that ride behind me that it provides a lot of light.

I also put the saddlebag lid LED/spoilers on the back and the HD fog lamps on the front which I leave on at all times. I don't have any empirical AMA, NTSB, NHTSA, etc. studies to prove it but I am pretty sure having more light on the bike makes me more noticeable to cagers--even the ones that don't particularly like motorcycles.

Thanks for all the input everyone. Even if the lights dont draw much more attention I still like the way they look. How about the lights on the side of the tour pack?
