Wondering if this has happened to anyone else and if here's is a fix for it...?
Of the 3 fairing / windshield fasteners, 2 have cracked and 1 has broken completely. I'm talking about the plastic housing that holds the brass inserts.
I'm very certain I haven't overtorqued them. I live in the desert and ride every day.. including the 6 months out of the year where the temps are in triple digits all day into the evenings. Wondering if heat has anything to do with it.
Either way... overtorqued or heat... is there a fix? Please see the pics.
you might try and put the brass inserts back in place and use one of 2 products, your choice, one is called JB Weld and the other is All Crafts Epoxy, they are both 2 part epoxies, they harden rock hard and can be drilled and tapped if necessary. I would just use them to build up around the brass insert. I've used both in the past and they work really well and are very strong, hope this helps.
On my old 04 and my wife's 13 had the plastic around the inserts crack, never broke completely like on yours. On the inserts that came out I just coated them with JB weld and pushed them back in and filled the cracks with JB weld. I let the bike sit for 24 hours before putting it back together so it could harden properly. Haven't had a problem with the wife's 13 in more then a year, can't speak about the 04 cause I traded it in 2 years ago.
Hmmm...could be either (heat and/or torque). Have you had the fairing off much for maint?
Either way, good time for a painted inner fairing...see them for sale all the time here, CraigsList & eBay. Shouldn't be hard to find & swap is ~1/2 day, if you take your time.
Thanks for he info boys... I'll go with the JB Weld and see how that holds up over time. I'm glad I didn't get the " you need to buy a new fairing" answer, lol.
I'll do the time for a new fairing post..... I picked up a new painted aftermarket inner fairing a couple years ago off eBay for 100.00. Quality was nice, paint was very nice. Time consuming to install it, but would do it again.
Just last week I noticed an brass insert broke. I drilled out the rest screwed in a new HD replacement and it's all good again.
I've had to replace the metal brackets and a couple of the brass inserts. I've been able to repair the cracked plastic that holds the inserts with JB Weld. From what I see in your pictures the plastic that holds the brass inserts is too far gone. I think you're SOL on any kind of repair. I'd contact "Painted Fairings", https://www.facebook.com/TheFairingXChange/ and see about a trade or if they could offer you some kind of fix? If it were my inner fairing I'd bite the bullet and replace it altogether. In my opinion the ABS plastic that makes up the inner fairing is flawed, (too brittle). Changing out the inner fairing isn't that complicated and there's step by step "Sticky" on this forum as well as on Youtube.
