Had the same thing happen on my 2011 FLHRC, twice. Both times I put some ethanol specific cleaner in the tank, and after a few miles the light went off.
Join the Club! As mentioned thay are not very accurate. You can chase your tail trying to improve it, or live with it. It's only a guide and it is easy to adjust to how much fuel or mileage you still have available, after it comes on. You'll have to do that anyway, even if it came on later.
I use my gauge and light as indicators, not gospel, for fuel level.
On my bike, when the light comes on I have almost exactly a gallon left. I then know I have 33-38 miles or so before I'm out. If course I don't always see the moment it comes on and that's why I set the odometer. At 165 miles I start watching for a station, sooner if I'm farther out in the country.
I have NEVER seen anyone definitively say what sets off the light. Is it a different sensor than for the gas gauge, just one more function of the same sending unit, or a calculation similar to the miles remaining calculation. If anyone ever finds out and shares the info, people with your malfunction will have a better idea what needs to be checked.
