Getting ready for a week long trip on the FLHT and need more luggae space than the saddle bags. Found a good deal on a bag but was suprised to find out that the luggage rack is going to run me $189 at H-D.
Anybody know of an aftermarket rack that is more cost-effective... or anybody use luggage without a rack?I'll only use it once a year probably so having a hard time justifying the high price.
I bought the medium sissy bar and luggage rack that bolts to it when I got the bike.
Gotta admit I really like it alot.
Although I would get the tall instead of the medium because of the seat thickness of the passenger seat.
I only use it on Tuesdays or if the Wife comes along , you can take it off or put it on in seconds.
I have seen a system that just goes under the passenger seat and offers a couple of D rings on each side that looked interesting.
If I can find a link I'll send it to you , that might be really slick , as it just gives you a place to hook to for luggage.
Another possibility would be the old passenger grab handles , which are available through HD , that would give you a good spot
to hook to for luggage.

I would get the one that attaches to the sissy bar. HD has one, you know about, and Motherwell makes one. It doesn't have the V on it like the HD one.. which on the EG would look nicer. If you plan on getting the HD one, look at ordering it from one of the discount HD site. www.chicagoharley.com has a 20% discount. Just a thought. Seems like the Motherwell one was less than $150, but can't remember which aftermarket carrier had them. I have a ton of catalogs all over the house. Searched a few of them, with no luck. Try a web search, if you are interested in it. JMHO
Here's the link to the universal bag mounting kit.
For the money , it might be a good solution for your trip. http://www.kuryakyn.com/category.asp...=Racks+%5FBags
Just check out the top right window.
If not , you could make something based on the idea.

Then again if you only use it a couple of times a year, buy a few feet of soft black refrigeration foam rubber (itsabout 1" thick) and cut a piece big enough to cover the top of your fender, maybe a 6" by 10" slice. Now just bungie your bag on your fender. No scratches, cant see it anyway with a bag on it and costs about $185 less than the alternative.
