The current dealer said without the orange key he can't get into the SERT and make changes so they recommend a FP3.
I think he should find an Indy and change out the cams to something more streetable, then he can recommend a tuner that he is familiar with. What are any thoughts for anyone that went through this scenerio.

I didn't notice he was in Ohio. Roder's knows thier stuff. They built my motor last winter. They did a great job as they have on several friends builds. They will not try to sell you crap you don't need and they are masters dyno tuning.

I'm running a stage IV with S&S 557 cams and highlift rockers. Great low end I got 105Hp and 121Tq with PV and a good dyno. Also no ping 40mpg and it is still pulling hard at 6000rpm

OP, what "orange key" are you talking about?. Are you talking about the tuner module itself? I've had the SERTS on a 04 and 05 Dyna and both were the orange version, but there was never any kind of key...just the tuning module. The later SERTs were black and I ran that for my 11 Road King and have one now for my 15 Ultra. Without the married tuner he will have to go another route like a PV, TTS, etc.

Pretty sure the SE tuners are now locked out from anything but epa tunes anyway so the “orange key” thing is a dead end. Make sure ya have good compression and get a proper tune on the thing.

I had my bike tuned with a SERT. It's at the same Indy now for a new compensator and I asked him to tweak the cold start up. He started to and found the exact thing mentioned above. It will not let him change anything without downloading an EPA compliant tune.

Question. Did it ever run right when the Stage IV was installed? My first thought is there is something mechanically wrong with it and unrelated to the tune. If it was tuned before, nothing in the tune has changed and if it is as bad as you say, no one would have accepted that after paying that much for a tune. Any codes?

If not, forget about the SERT and throw it away. Find a local independent that has a good reputation for tuning, then ask him what he recommends and follow his advice.

Do not take it to a dealer. You already see the results with worthless effort to relocate the O2 sensor.

Good Luck!

If its a Stage IV dealer installed the cams are not the wild anyway. If its bucking and popping down low, its probably the tune. They put the kit in the motor and download a preset tune from HD. If it works great, if it don't, very few dealers have a dyno tuner capable of fixing it. Not all, their are some great folks working for dealers, but tuning and building motors are not their primary focus.
Find an independent tuner, you may have to switch to a different tuner than the SE tuner that is on their.
Heres a hint....if the tune doesn't take about 3 hrs to do.....you didn't get a dyno tune.

I would go Power Vision. Then at least you can datalog and see what needs to be changed when you tune it.

Pv2, or tts mastertune in the hands of a competent dyno tuner.
