2004 Road king 28K mi. has a knocking noise. Hear it most in front of primary by the compensator, but also at the front cylinder rocker box (using a stethoscope)
Re adjusted the adjustable pushrods with no change.
Hoping it is a loose compensator bolt/nut? Can that make a knock that sounds similar to a rod knock? What is torque spec for compensator bolt/nut and also for primary cover? I don't have service manual for this bike.
Could a loose compensator also cause upon starting to start turning over and momentarily pause and then start up? or maybe just battery getting week?
Any help in what to look for regarding compensator or special steps would be helpful (loosen chain adjuster first....)

If by chance you have an external breather, check the lines. I just went through a similar issue on my 14 FLHTK. I have an external breather, and the hose dump at the frame was pinched by a tie-wrap (dumb *** on my part). Took to Tmec HD, and the tech found the pinched tube. It is all good now.

Sounds exactly what my 03 was doing when the nut cam loose. Here's a link to a thread with the torque procedure. I didn't use any shims or machine the nut. I just cleaned mine, added red lock tite and followed the torque procedure. Make sure you have a locking bar to lock the compensator pulley.
I had a knocking noise that I could hear loudly in the rocker box covers with a stethoscope on a 06 ultra. It was a loose compensator bolt. I wasnt sure if the springs were weak or something so I replaced the compensator with one from drag specialties and I havent looked back.
Thanks, Now I'm looking forward to tearing into it. My heart sank when I first heard the knock and thought it had to be a rod. But the more I look into it, it sure seems or at least I hope it is just a loose compensator bolt
