Police model Electra Glides
What's different on these models. Looking at buying a 2004 Electra glide Police Edition. Is this engine strong and how does it differ. I see the bags have a **** on top - whats that for? Other than that I don't see any real other differences. Any input would help.
The main difference between a LE bike and that of a citizens, is the cop bike will always have been "used hard and put away wet". For the LEO's, it's just a tool.
Mine never came with a oil cooler, nor any of the one's I was looking at,
At the time it was a decent price and I could afford it,my bike has a few problems with some premature wear,so ...... I probally got one of the more abused one's and the maintenance seems to have been lacking as well.
This is my first harley,I enjoy it alot, and i'll deal with what ever it needs to have done to it, ,the bike looks real nice, not all scratched up or dented, crash bars show no wear either(very common thing to look for).
I'm sending my bike in for a 95in stage 2 kit,and probally some pipes as well,I know i have some upper end wear in my motor @8,900 miles. this will give me a chance to have some of the more likely worn parts changed out,and be able to see if others are as well, Police bikes come with no warrentee,Mine still has a original warrentee through New England Police vehicles, the reason it is still under them ,is that if it is switched into my name, there is no warrentee, this is how the dealer was able to keep the warrentee on the bike when they sold it to me,but............ never told me this,i've owned the bike since june of this year, still listed as being owned by NEPVleasing on the warrentee. (not that a dealer will fix anything anyway "normal" seems to be a very common thing heard at HD dealers)
as mike said, there is a plus with the "pucks" on top of the bags,I too can open mine at highway speed, reach in change out my glasses as the sun goes down,or grab a drink, then just close the lid, turn the puck, down the road i go,
I enjoy my bike for the simple reason it's "different" than the norm, everyone has the black, blue eg's,not alot of birch white ones,ya you see one once in awhile, but it's different looking
Go into this looking at the police bikes with your eyes open, there are some very sweet police bikes out there, and alot of look sweet ,but beat hard as well. I knew nothing about harleys, never owned one,but had always wanted one. My salesman saw me coming,he worked me over pretty good, filled my head with all kinds of wonderful thoughs, how these bikes are such a wonderful deal, how well the dealer maintains them,yada,yada,yada...
I have a buddy who bought a new 05 EG stanard and has had more problems than I have, with my police model.
Did I make the right choice,buying the police over a new standard,probally never know,but I'm pleased with mine,and it's a keeper!.

Solo seat and resulting lack of passenger pegs, orig. "police" run-flat tires are not load rated for passengers. All can be addressed relatively easily. You'll probably want a Corbin or Mustang seat anyway. Passenger pegs and mounts can be found cheap on E-bay. Tires, well it's your call whether you replace 'em or not. I did.
No wiring for cruise control or radio, and no hand controls for either. Controls could proably be changed if this is important to you.
No wiring for air temp and oil pressure add-in gages. Though they can be wired in, it just takes more effort. Might be the same issue for the H-D security system and some other electrical accessories that plug into the factory harness.
Saddle bag latches, as others mentioned. I have become a big fan of the way these work, seems much better than the regular latch style, if not as "clean" looking.
I believe the charging system has a higher rating, at least on the older ones, so it has a different stator and voltage regulator.
Motor finish is black and chrome, where I think the FLHT has "natural" finish and chrome.
Some Police bikes seem to have oil coolers, while some don't. Mine does not.
I'm sure there's some other stuff too.
My '03 with 20,000 miles of Police service[:-][:-] has been dead reliable since I got it, I've put about 2,500 miles on it so far. It dosent burn or leak any oil, and shifts, runs, and drives excellent. I love it, especially for the price I paid.
Police bikes are great, just shop carefully and pick a good one. It might be a good idea to have an independant mechanic have a look at it before you buy.

I know quality will vary from area to area, but for the most part I wouldn't be afraid of a low mileage ex-cop bike.
