i have a 1990 FXRP with the heal toe shifter that comes through the primery . the splines have gone on the shifter and people are asking exorbtant prices . is it possable to replace the splined shaft and the a 2 piece shifter like in later models ?
You can. You have to remove both outer and inner primary covers. Which means entire primary drive system. It's nothing you can't do with a manual and tools and time.
I have a 1990 Glide with the shifter at the front of the primary and replaced the splined shaft only recently. I got the parts without any difficulty, however as you are in Israel (I assume) you may find it a challenge to get them. Try Zodiac and Jan Willem Boon, both in Holland, to see if they regard Israel as part of Europe! I recommend you also get the bushings and seals as part of your rebuild.
Since its a 1990 and depending how nice it looks, and this is your choice.
I would drill a hole through the shifter and spline shaft and install a roll pin.
Depending on how you do it, others may not even know its there. This fix is quick and easy, get you back on the road until you find the parts and install them. The roll pin may even last the entire time you own the bike.
If you are speaking of the shaft that the heel and toe shift levers attach to it is a relatively simple project ... A new shaft, both levers and pinch bolts will do the trick ... If the shaft is loose ( wobbles in the bushings located in the primary, get two new bushings also ) If you're referring to the lever being loose on the shaft that comes out of the transmission that is a bit more difficult ... Try removing the pinch bolt and then use a new bolt to clean out any crud in the lever threads ( do not use a tap ) ... then clean out any residue with some brake clean ... Apply some Loctite to a new pinch bolt and torque it down ... I've done this with success on several scooters ... You might also try looking up "Better Lever" ( https://www.betterlever.com/ ) ... pricey but an alternative to a tear down.
