There’s more at work with front suspension than the springs or cartridges. Yes, maybe the cartridges are maintenance free but what Howard was saying is, it’s not as simple as; install the cartridges and then you never need to pay any attention to the front end ever again. Which is what you alluded to in your first post here saying:

With oil still being necessary in the fork slider, you still need to maintain the integrity of the oil, the bushing, and seal that separates the fork slider and fork tube. That’s the point Howard was making, and he’s correct.

You have yourself a spectacular Easter weekend

If you can't see that Howard is talking about maintenance to the fork tube assemblies, and not the actual cartridges..... Then you're the one that's being self righteous and argumentative...

Many people hear "maintenace free" about cartridges, and consider that to mean they no longer need to check or maintain the forks....

It is a false statement to say your "forks" are maintenance free once you install cartridges...

Me argumentative? Not....

Why would anyone assume or conclude, based on the context and the actual chain of comments, talking about fork cartridges being maintenance free, followed by Howard’s comments calling “bs”, then showing a picture of oem fork springs setup, which has a completely different wear and abrasive surfaces?!?!?

I also stated that nowhere have I found or has anyone offered a recommended or required fork maintenance schedule for fork cartridges, in stark difference to the widely known maintenance requirements for fork springs setups, such as chainring fork oil every 20k miles, replacing wear bushings as recommended, etc......

fair enough and certainly applicable information, but, still no detailed “maintenance” requirement

Again, as I stated above, you said that if you changed to cartridges, the forks would become maintenance free, which was wrong, and that is what Howard was telling you. Whether there are cartridges or the OEM springs inside, the lower sliders and fork tubes still have a bushing, a seal, and oil is still involved. Which requires periodic maintenance. Just because there isn’t a set deadline of when to change these, it doesn’t mean that it never needs to be done.

You’re completely disregarding what you said which promted Howard’s response. I quoted it earlier for easy reference.

Completely different abrasive surfaces....? Really....? Don't cartridge & OEM shocks share lowers, tubes, bushings, fluid, seals, the tubes sliding in/out of the lowers?

I also stated that nowhere have I found or has anyone offered a recommended or required fork maintenance schedule for fork cartridges, in stark difference to the widely known maintenance requirements for fork springs setups, such as chainring fork oil every 20k miles, replacing wear bushings as recommended, etc......

I would suggest that since the two systems use the same fork oil, wear bushings, etc that you have found your suggested maintenance schedule for forks with cartridges.. if you disagree, please provide the "decisively indisputable logic, clear evidence, documented scientific study" you demand of others, to support your claims..

This was your original statement:

That statement is absolutely incorrect.

I've just re-read this whole thread, and anyone else reading it will understand why your original statement is absolutely incorrect.

Howard gave good info on why & how, your original statement was incorrect.

You're whining aside, while I enjoyed our "discussion", there's really nothing else that needs to be said....

Oh I forgot, Happy Easter!

Hahahahahahahaha.........

The wear surfaces are almost completely eliminated going to cartridges - leaving only the lower and upper bushings, and, unless someone can provide different corroborated information otherwise, that’s what I have.....

With fork cartridges, no oil changes, and nothing else required that I have found or recommended by the manufacturer(s), so the argumantve responses are from the “because I told you so” responses, including Howard’s.....

cheers - have a great Easter weekend

buy shocks, fork cartridges, or whatever , or don’t

its all good
