Not part of the club yet. Still shopping but my current bike has never seen a garden hose. I have ridden in the rain but prefer the "spray and wipe" version to clean it. I also use a California Car Duster regularly.
I think what they are getting at is dont open up a coldhose on a red hot parked bike. That kind of shock can loosen exhausts or do much worse. Rain while riding wont hurt it at all.
I haven't hosed off my bike once. I use two buckets of water. One with the sun wash, and the other with clean water. I wouldn't worry about using a hose, but I would never get all the water off before it dried and left spots. I rinse a section with a very wet cloth, use the sunwash, and rinse it with clean water. Then I dry that section, and move to another section. AND YES, it takes me forever to wash my bike. That is why I only do it when I look at the bike and say "WOW, gotta wash the bike". I do dust it off before every ride or so. But, I ride almost every day, so the bike doesn't have time to get to dusty, except from this freakin' desert I live in.[:@]
Dang!! Now ya tell me!...Saturday a week ago, I spent all day riding in the rain in a poker run for local charity. The bike ran great, no prob's. It did, however take me about 2 hrs to clean it up the next day.
I don't wet it when it's hot. To clean the rims and such, I use zep orange oil and it takes the dirty road grime and oil and grease right off. Spray on and leave for a couple minutes and wash off with the hose. Shiny Haven't tried the lemon pledge yet though.
My manual also says 6th gear at 55. Try that one. My loacal service manager says that will cause all kinds of problems and he told me that the manual didn't say that. Go look it up. T.

And I'll bet you got it wet then too. You are really going to have problems
