Hey guys, New here and I have got a question. I just sold my good ol' 86 Electra Glide and I am buying a 1997 Fuel Injected Road King. It has drag pipes and a hypercharger air cleaner and I an not sure about the EFI and Calibration. I don't know if whoever installed this stuff had it calibrated. Is is anything to worry about. Sounds good. Should I just check the plugs to see how everything is like the old days or should I take it to a dealer for an evaluation. I plan on eventually changing the drag pipes to dual exhaust...will I need to do anything then? Thanks for the advice.
hi, ihave a 97 rdking efi ,magneti/marelle efi is a bitch,only 38mm bore,check to see if bored to 42mm,if so good,also hypercharger real good. change to a two to one for better power or tuned duels. may need dfo or power commander to fine tune. aftermarket efis are available also. in order to tune magnettie better remove air cleaner backing plate,youwill see two sealed screws,clear away seal. adjust screws simaler to air fuel mix screws on carbs.goodluck
The older EFI system is really not that bad. If everything is adjusted properly and all sensors are functioning correctly....it is a very reliable system. Changing to dual pipes in the future should not be any of concern reguarding the EFI system. If it is running alright with drag pipes, it should run fine with dual pipes as well with no caliburation.
The service manual reguarding all the EFI system is highly recommended. It has nice troubleshooting charts and has realtime diagnosing techniques if something quiet isn't right with the EFI. As time goes on....fewer and fewer dealerships want to mess with the older stuff. Just something to think about.

Like I said I am new to injection and honestly I am a bit nervous. I see a lot of posts that guys have installed power commanders or the like. Am I correct in thinking that with one installed you can download "maps" to adjust for pipes, air cleaners etc or make the adjustments manually?
It may even already have one installed, when I looked at the bike I did not know to look for one.
The thing that I don't understand is that some guys say you don't need to do anything but every accessory Harley has says that recalibration is necessary or you will cause major engine damage.
With all that said....if it does not have a module such as a power commander should I install one so that I can make adjustements when I change the pipes and air cleaner...it has a hypercharger and drags now and I do not plan to keep them. How about a Power Commander II for this model? I found one that is NOS for $79.00 shipped....
hey man,hope all is well. the dealer/mechanic will know if a power commander is already installed.they also can plug in the scanalyser to check for downloads.a change from dragpipes is good,keep the hypercharger its a excellent air system you cant get much better.efi uploads are necesary if you upgrade motor or cam. the power com. will fine tuneall.if you want call me at403-478-6505.easier to talk live.typing not my bag
Thanks Dallonj, I appreciate your input....I just got home with the Road King...It was about a 45-50 mile ride home...just enough time to get acquainted with my new ride! What a sweet ride! Man, I felt like I was riding a motorcycle again! No offense to the full dressers guys (That's what I have been riding for the last 5 years)
The performance was great...starts right up. idles great, and runs real strong from start to really laying into....the drag pipes don't even sound to bad... I pulled a spark plug before paying the guy and leaving with it...just to make sure it wasn't white indicating a lean condition...it was actually a little black probably from idling in the guys garage for a good while when I initially checked it out....I have a Power Commander II New in package for it coming from ebay that I bought for $79.00 shipped.
I do still plan on removing the Kuryaken Hypercharger and the Drags though...just not my style.
I have a '98 Road Glide, same Evo, same EFI. I wish I'd read this earlier today. If you can, cancel the PC II that you have coming. I have had one on my bike for eight years, and it is a great upgrade. However, the PC II has been replaced by the PC III usb. It has many updates, but the real problem is that the tuners no longer have software to work with the PC II. I will order the new one as soon as can. $282.00 delivered from Jamie at Motofuel. He will preload it with a map for your specific mods.
Those PC IIs for $79.00 are someones old stock. I suggest you get the best available for your bike.
BTW, what will you do with the Hypercharger? I may be interested.
First, off, I will tell you from experience that the PCII is a piece of crap. It was definitely not Dynojet's finest hour, and I don't think even they would protest that too much. The PC III is a totally different animal and it's excellent.
Second, I have absolutely no problem with the MM fuel injection system. Unless you're trying to make huge hp numbers, it works well and is very reliable. In your case, if you plan no major upgrades, a DFO or similar device might be all you need for adding a little fuel. Or you might need nothing at all.
Finally, for any number of reasons, lose the dragpipes. They suck power and make noise and that's it.
Thanks for the advice... I have already ordered the PCII so I am going to try it. I have communicated with several different guys that have had years of good service with them. The drags pipes will be replaced next week with an HD 2 into 1 system. I am likely going to go with a Screamin Eagle Stage 1 for the air filter.
