Default 38 amp rotor with 45 amp stator

Put in a 38 amp Accel rotor with 45 amp Cycle Elec. stator in my 2001 Ultra. Been having a charging problem since i put these in. Charges at highway speeds but not in traffic. Didn't notice until I checked my paperwork that the amps didn't match.
J&P said they should work together and I probably had a bad stator. Will I still get 45 amps out of the stator ?

Yes, for example, changing just a stator to a higher output in the system will increase the amps.
Did you put a new battery in too?

the only difference between the two systems is the rotor. stronger, and more magnets make the difference. change the rotor to the proper 45 amp piece and all should be well again

When I upgraded to the 32amp stator in my shovel I used the original rotor with no issues, been running 15 years now that way but I have gone through 2 regulators. Reason I up graded was toasting a reg about every 3 years or so and the old 17amp ones where starting to get hard to get..

Contrary to popular belief the magnet count is the same on all of them, some rotors encapsulate them verse just glued on. Winding's on the stator is what makes the difference not the rotors.

I'v read in other posts that the size of the rotor determines the out put. It's either a mismatch or a bad stator. I just don't know which one. But I don't know why it won't charge at lower RPMS.

I've been down this road with my 2000 ultra. The difference between the 38 and 45 amp systems is the rotor. Harley went the cheap route and rather than upgrade the windings in the stator for more amperage with a stronger stator, they just used a different rotor with stronger magnets. With all the lights and doo-dads on an ultra, we need the extra juice, or there will be no appreciable charging at low rpms. I ended up putting a cycle electric stator on mine, with the stock 45 amp rotor and no longer have charging issues. Cycle electric has a pretty good writeup on their site regarding the charging systems that are on our bikes.

Talked to Cycle Electric and they recommend the $400 3 phase system or $200 to upgrade rotor.

The 3 phase system would be a good upgrade. I looked into it when my stator crapped out the last time, money just wasn't there for it. The new (proper) rotor will bring you back to oem standards and will get you charging again. The 3 phase system is what newer bikes are running and it's less stressed than what we are running currently, it's just a bit pricey.

You talked to the right people. My $.02 says go three phase.
