Default Back-Fire when starting

Only been getting out about once a week last month or so but when I start it up after sitting in garage between these rides she backfires when it starts. This happened Friday late afternoon and then again today when starting it. Is there some timing/fuel issue or both causing this? What is a typical cause of backfiring when starting? Oh, and just remembered that I heard it *pop* once or twice today when down shifting - coming upon a stop. Any ideas or suggestions as to what I might want to check out would certainly be mucho appreciated

Lean, too much air in ratio to fuel causing pre-ignition. Was it tuned or did you use a canned map?

Ok. I was thinking it was rich but hey, what do I know?! I'm really new to this and the bike is 'new' to me but it has a tuner and PO had some mapping done so perhaps it need to go in for a re-flash?

How old is your battery? When I have a new battery, the machine starts just like it did when it was new. As the battery tires out, I start getting "crowd pleasing", entertaining starts, especially at the gas station. Often it cranks with no fire, and then a loud backfire when releasing the starter switch. Then it will start on the next try.

PO said he put a new battery in "last year". I've had the bike a bit over one month so I'm still learning its 'personality'!

It wouldn't hurt to take some readings on the battery I'm sure 🙂

You'd be surprised what all odd sorta stuff a good hot battery will cure. I'd pull yours and have it load tested and thoroughly charged first. If nothing else on the bike has changed and it only has the symptom after sitting a spell, that's where I'd start. Do you have it on a tender when it sits? For the record, a week, IMO, is t long enough to warrant putting a bike on a battery tender, but if you have a battery starting to lose a little umph, it may get it through one more season.

Yes, I do keep a tender on it. Thanks for your reply!
