Default Showa 54532

I'm running Showa's on my 1999 FLHT and they have both snapped at the welds on the bottom at different intervals. Any suggestions on solid replacements that wont cost me an arm and a leg?

I asume you have stock air shocks? There are plenty of them available secondhand, either 13" or 12", as owners often want to swap from one size to the other. Sporty owners also like them, so there is a steady trade in secondhand ones. Check the HDF Classifieds as a starter.

Define what your budget is, and what “an arm and a leg” means to you.

If new shocks are in your budget, plan on somewhere between $500-$1000. If that just is not doable, you will need to find good condition takeoffs, and hopefully find a set setup close to what you need. If all else fails, you can get a used set of oem air shocks on eBay or in the forums classifieds - ballpark is $100 shipped for a set, but I would only offer this as a last resort to get you riding, if you just can’t afford to upgrade.

Check the classifieds - there is at least one set of great shocks up for sale, probably more, at a very reasonable price. The set I saw earlier today, which may have sold, were a set of JRI’s setup for a bigger rider and passenger, but priced really well, at i think $375 + shipping.

You are way better off replacing the old tired & broken air shocks with quality coil over preload and rebound adjustable shocks, but again, your budget is going to determine what you are comfortable spending, and in the end, what you can afford.

There are more than a few recent threads about what shocks to buy on this forum - do a search and read through them.

Good luck and happy hunting,
