I guess if you want to technical, the op asked what the capacity was ... the capacity won’t change with or without a filter change. How much you add will ... the capacity will ALWAYS be 4.0 quarts. The manual specifies to add 3.5 quarts after draining the oil with a filter change, I always low ball that number by half a quart and adjust after I check the dipstick.

No need to "know" or "test" anyone since the previous 7 out of 7 replies covered nearly every capacity known to man between 3 and 4 quarts including at the microscopic fractional level. No way can I compete with that wealth of knowledge. Its on the same level of expertise as the scientific community has given with "Global Climate Change" so I am way out in the outfield of knowledge on this one so i just sit back and learn.

3 quarts. Including filter. Never fill to max capacity and there’s always some left in the case.

Never heard 3 quarts before. Is that softails with seperate oil tank under seat? Touring bikes is 3.5- 4. I believe owners manuals for my own says 3.5 and service manual says 4.

Many people run the 1/2 quart low. I usually start with 4 a let it blow out.
