Default Help! I messed up.

In my rush to change my oil I got about a mile and realized that I didn't put on the new oil filter. What do I do? Amsoil is expensive, so I want to not lose too much. What can I do to keep the least amount of oil pouring out when I change the filter. I figure wait til it's cold. But If I carefully lay the bake on the crash bars on the right side..? What's the consensus? TIA

well if it was me I'd suck it up and perform a redo..but you could just drain and filter the oil and reuse it..that would be my tight wad Plan B...but really, with the oil filter drain catcher part thingy and upright or maybe even on the jiffy stand I'd be surprised if just removing the filter with oil in the engine is much different than without but I really don't know..you could have someone sit on the bike upright and be prepared to lean it to the right if it becomes obvious it's going to pour out..have it close to a wall so they don't lean to far over and dump it..just thinking out loud

Just drain the oil into a clean drain pan, pull and replace the filter and pour the oil back in. I doubt it's that contaminated. Or just use two qts of the drained oil and two fresh quarts.

On a side note one would think "How could someone forget to change the filter?" Stuff happens, I've done it. My 7.3 Powestroke takes 15 quarts of oil, two of those in the filter. Several times I've poured the other 13 qts. into the crankcase after forgetting to close the Fumoto valve on the pan. Talk about a mess, not to mention $75 worth of oil.

I am OCD about even the simple things especially with the bike. Even changing the oil I now use the service manual and go step by step on everything.

Your not going to loose any additional oil pulling your oil filter without previously draining your oil. You’re going to have to add maybe 6oz of new oil to makeup for filling the new filter.

Please do not lean the bike over .Just change the filter and be done with it. It won't madder one bit, If amsoil is that expensive switch to another brand. Better to forget to change filter than to forget to put it on. ,Slow down most of this stuff is just not that critical, you'll drive yourself nuts at this pace. It is not a space shuttle.

My dad used to say changing the oil without changing the filter is like taking a shower and putting back on your dirty clothes. Dump the oil and filter and start over. If you can't afford the oil
how did you afford the bike. Honestly it's not that much. We all learn from our mistakes. Be safe

Why are people recommending draining the oil and starting over?
If you replace the filter the only oil you're going to loose is what is in the old filter. 95% of the new oil is somewhere else...

Change the filter and top it off. If you want its no problem to lean it over on the engine guard, lay down a towel. Ive dumped my bike half a dozen times on both side in the parking lot and you cant see the scratches.
