I did a search, and couldnt find the specifics, and the service manual doesnt cover my question. Which is as follows:
I own an 02 Road King Classic, and there are two toggle switches on the fork cap. One is for the passing lamps, the other is an accessory switch. I am wanting to hardwire my Garmin into my bike. I have a Zumo 550 with the motorcycle mount.
In preparation for all this, I went to go trace the wires from the other switch that I want to use (I bought the bike used a couple years ago). Well-there are no wires at all. Just the toggle switch. So, I removed that, as it needs to be replaced anyway.
Now, here comes my question. I am guessing that this switch was somehow tied into the wiring somewhere. Problem is, I dont know where. I also need a part # for that switch-even pointing in the right direction so I can find it will help.
Now, the next question-for even maybe someone that has done this. Where, exactly, does one splice the wires into that circuit? I dont want it in an always charging state-hence hooking it up to something that is only on when the bike is running. Is there a plug I need to attach it to? Do I need a specific plug for the bare wires that I have for the Garmin unit?
I hope this makes sense. I am at work and cannot get pictures.
I think I get what you're asking. I had an 02 RKC, but I traded it a few years back. That switch was a dummy switch on mine as well. I went with a bullet style, cigarette lighter power supply on the handlebars to power the GPS. I wanted it removable for theft prevention.
I'm not sure how applicable this is to your situation with an '02, but on the '03 RKC that switch is wired to the accessory plug under the seat. My manuals are at home or I could tell you exactly.
Here is the switch part number from the '03. I'm sure it's the same part # for you at least: 71522-96 SWITCH, SPOTLAMP & ACCY.
Here is another option, I know this about 09-13's. Pull the headlight and look about 6'' back from the plug and see if there is orange wire with a white stripe along side a black wire. If so, they are a switched power supply( headlight on=power, headlight off=no juice). A bunch of us have tapped into these and added a cigarette style 12v socket for power. Hope this helps....

Problem is, the dummy switch for mine was exactly that-no wiring, JUST the switch.
