Finally got tired of trying to plan a ride around all of the rain we are having in East Texas this year. So I ignored the weather forecasters and took a quick ride to a small town about 40 miles away Saturday afternoon just to see what the town. It was one of those "never been there so why not" rides. Well sure enough about two miles out it started to lightly rain. Just as we pulled into a parking space the bottom fell out. Great timing. The bike got soaked while my wife and I sat in a Mexican food resturant and watched. Rained about an hour before it let up enough to head back home.
Point of the post - there really isn't one except to say how well the Ultra Classic rides in the rain, how dry I stayed compared to my old Kawasaki Nomad and that I really need to find a rain suit for my wife and I.
We use Stearns rip-stop rain wear from Walmart. You buy them as separates, so you can get a top or bottom sized to fit accordingly. They jacket folds up in one of it's pockets. The cargo style pants come in a small bag. Two sets take up very little room in a saddlebag. We have been using these for several years now and stay dry. I did spray them with Camp Dry to help maintain their water proofness a while back. You can get a set for about 40 bucks.
This is a set by a pint, not quart bottle. They pack downpretty small.
One more thing...To keep them down on your legs, you can use ironing board strap cover straps like stirrups. They look kind of like mini-suspenders with clips on each end. You can find them in the ironing section, usually. I use them on my jeans also on long trips to keep my pants from riding up.
REI sells a Helly/Hansen pant that has full length zippers making it reeeeaallly easy to get on when I ride right into the weather. My jacket is a Fieldsheer motorcycle rainjacket, longer torso, double flap zipper, etc.
I picked up some frogtogs from Academy Sports. They have two versions, the one I got has the velcro on the ankles and wrists and I liked the fit better. They store in a fairly small space. I got my 3XL set for $59.00.
