I went about 35 miles before I got out of the mountains to a gas station. I didn't go to my bike stalled due to lack of fuel though.
uhhh... what? [sm=confused06.gif]

The last time I filled up shortly after the light came on was able to pump about 4.3 gallons into the tank. I don't know about the rest of you, but my guage seems to go pretty slow from Full to the half mark and then race like hell towards the empty line. I go by mileage now. I start hunting for fuelwhen I get to 140 miles on a tank. The most I have ever gone was to 172 miles and I was sweating. I think I pumped 4.7 gallons into it that time...[sm=alcoholic.gif]
I should have started with...I was in the moutains when my fuel light went on...

my light routinely comes on at about 170 miles when i am driving combined highway city. if i pull right in to the station i'll take 4 gallons. if i ride another 25 miles it'll take 5.2 or 5.3 . on the highway doing 75 on a long road trip i'll do 200 miles before the light comes on and i can run another 30 if pressed. i usually pull over at the first stop.......205 or 210.....it'll take 5 gallons.

In short - to answer your question - do as most of the people have responded with here - cuz each bike is gonna be a little different & its gonna depend on your riding style/conditions for the day. You know your tank is 5 gallons, right? Fill'er up to the brim...set your odometer...and run'er as low as ya can - then figure out your average mile per gallon.

I hit about 175 miles per tank for average mixed riding (side roads/highway & goof'n off)...so when my light goes on - I have about 35 miles before I'll run out.

Of course, I usually fuel up before the before light goes on or as soon as it goes on most of the time anyway & always top off before know big trips/full riding days...running out of gas on a bike bites the big one...

If I fill it to the brim right after the light comes on, it only takes three gallons + or - a few tenths to fill it to the neck flange. I figure there's around two gallons left in there so I could go about 90 miles beforeI'm sitting along side the road waving the siphontube at passersby. [:'(]

I wish the light came on with between 0.9 and one gallon left. I use my trip odometer to gage refueling but don't like riding with the fuel pump light on. The warning is way too early.

Mine comes on a little earlier than most. I can get just 3.5 gallons in once the light shines.

If set correctly you will have 1.0 gallons when the light comes on. There will b .07 gallons useable with the other .03 below the fuel pick up on carbureted and estimated same amount on fuelie's. This is for sediment and tank liners that have come off on earlier models, lol. The fuelie's sock floats around so it's level is not as precise. use your estimated MPG and multiply be .07 and that should be safe.

I usually fill up before it comes on. I always get over 4 gallons in the tank without the light coming on. One time I put 4.5 in before it came on on.

I don't trust the light at all. By the time mine comes on I'm running on fumes.

Mine usually comes on when I've got a gallon left.
