Just this sept. heading west on I 84 near Hood river, bucking strong headwinds then south on 97 towards Antelope, we sopped up way more fuel than anticipated. It's an ugly feeling in the pit of your gut to stop in one of those tiny ghost towns to find out the only gas station closed down months or years ago. It was un-charted waters for me with two new women riders in tow as the last light was diminishing, add in this time of year and it's very anxiety producing. Spare gas on board for me when on long trips from now on.

All good points. I carry TWO of them on long trips. One for me, and possibly one for someone stranded. The reda cans work quite well, if one is at all careful. I've never had a problem with them smelling up my saddlebags, either. Then again, I also carry a pretty comprehensive tool kit, a tire plug kit, and an air compressor. Plus, a co2 cartridge kit, just in case no battery power available. Only ever used the tire kits on somebody elses flat tires, so they're good for that, too. Getting stranded sucks, big time., no matter what you ride.
