Default Re-installing RG fairing blues!

Ok, I'm crying 'uncle'! I pulled the outer fairing to get to a bare wire I could see between the inner fairing and the speedo/tach cluster. So now it's time to put back together and I'm needing some advice how to line up the slots above the headlights on the fairing and the two hooks under the radio. Anyone know a trick they'd be willing to share?

There should be a "hook" to hang it on to get it lined up.
Start watching at the 7:10 mark.

Thanks, but I already knew about the slots and hooks - I'm having trouble getting them together! It seems that the wiring protrudes enough to keep it from 'seating'. So, maybe an extra set of eyes and hands might help 🙂

what works for me is to come straight at it, holding the fairing down low, and kinda pull the sides out, while if you line up the outer fairing and the inner fairing behind the windshield and just raise and lower the outer fairing a little until you feel the hooks go in the slots....

has worked for me every time. except one. felt like it all clicked together, but when i let go, the fairing 'popped' off the hooks and the headlights fell right smack on my fender. i had a towel to protect from scratches, but it wasn't thick enough to protect from dents by the weight of the daymakers. pisses me off every time i see it....

good luck, you'll get it. if you have to step away for a minute, i advise you to do so.

Keep trying you'll get the hang of it eventually. I struggled initially too, but got to the point where I could do it in my sleep

Good advice skratch, I have been away from it for a few hours now and won't mess with it again for a couple days. I will definitely focus on your method and see if that does it. Sorry to hear about the dents man, I've got mine covered up with a folded up thick bed sheet but think I'll add a heavy bath towel to that when I get back at it ??

Hey there you are. Did you get my PM a couple of weeks ago? I’ve been trying to reach you to see if you want to go riding with me and nomadmax. Sent you a PM but got no reply. Anyway, as to your question, I used to remove the headlight basket, install the outer fairing and then reinstall the headlight basket. Seems like a lot of unnecessary extra work but it really makes things easier. That way you make absolutely certain everything is lined up properly. Mine was so tight I actually had to remove the headlights from the basket, install the basket and then reinstall the headlights last. I’ll be glad to ride over there and help you with it if you want me to. I had mine off so many times I told OD’s Cycle Shop to consider hiring me as their resident Road Glide fairing R&R Specialist.

Yeah, I actually have been thinking about that method believe it or not! Now that I hear that someone had done it that way, makes it more 'confirming' to have give it a shot!

I looked at my PM's and I see nothing....? I am using GT on my iPhone - don't know if that makes any difference. I'll check when on the laptop tho 🙂

I have taken the time to carefully redo the wiring harness so there is alot more room to put back on. Now its alot better to put back on but never as easy as when I take the headlights out . You then can see the hanger. Good luck and dont rush yourself. It gets easy after a few tries

I did it this way too. Put fairing on, plug power into both headlights then align up the headlamp basket adjusters to holes in fairing and it pops right in.
I even put some metal strips on the fairing where it rubs on the hangers. There were some groves in my fairing from rubbing on hangers.
Just take your time.
