Default rotors n pads

Have a 2005 Electra Glide on which I would like to upgrade the brakes. Did research on brakes pads - sintered vs organic - and believe that organic brake pads are the way for me to go. Also looked at different rotors and opted for Harley Davidson floating rotors. With Harley rotors and Twin Power brake pads in hand I got the back wheel removed and prepared to make the switch. Here is where I ran into my problem. According to the literature accompanying the rotor:

"This brake disc must be used ONLY with brake pad kit (44209-87C). If that brake pad kit is not used, the disc will be damaged and its useful life shortened."

The brake pads I have are sold as replacement pads for this year and rear position on this model motorcycle. Is the literature statement an attempt by Harley Davidson just designed to get owners to purchase the Harley Davidson pads? Are pads for floating rotors different than those for non-floaters?

I've used H-D floating rotors and been very happy with them - I don't recall any such warnings. Unless you do monster mileages I suspect you will find it difficult to detect any increased rate of wear, regardless of what brand of pads you use. I currently use EBC rotors and pads, both ends.

Sounds like the same sort of OEM warning about using only Harley oil, etc.

Don't know of any properties of the rotor that would cause it to work poorly with other pads. Tis true that a semi-metalic pad will wear the rotor down along with the pads. That's generically true of any semi-metal pad rubbing against the metal of the rotor. The pads wear more, but the rotor wears too. Far less rotor wear with an organic pad.

Stay with the HD brand there the best in braking for your bike it will eliminate a lot of headaches down the road.

I found that using EBC double sintered pads have great stopping power, my rotors got changed at around 60000 miles and are ready to be changed again at 100000 miles...I buy take offs new or like new stock rotors and I never had issues.

I just recently (last month) replaced the rotors and pads on my 05 Ultra. For the life of me I can't get the front to stop ringing. I hate to call it a squeal, it's more of a harmonic thing at lower speeds.
