Had this issue repeatedly last season, as I had changed the oil when I put my '11 away for winter and put the filter on hand tight. At the end of last season I switched to a K&N filter with a nut on it, and went 1/4 turn past hand tight with a wrench. No leaking this season so far.
make sure the old gasket is not still on the plate. I know I am a wise *** but if you cant get simple maintenance right maybe you should go to a shop.
Nice reply. I've been changing oil on all my vehicles since I started driving. This is the first time that I've had this happen. I had 2 Sportsters prior to this touring bike and just thought I'd throw out the question. You can take this kind of attitude and kindly shove it up your ***.

Very diplomatic response to a very dick headed comment. Ive been working on cars and motorcycles since 1974 and, as I said in my previous post, the same thing happened to me the first time I serviced a Harley. That was the one and only time I ever had an oil filter come loose. Harleys are different animals. If you dont get the filter on there just right itll vibrate loose. Theres a reason you have to retorque the critical fasteners at regular intervals. The dick head in question would have us believe hes never made a mistake working on a Harley. Like my mama always said, If you cant say anything nice dont say anything at all. Or, as a bumper sticker I saw said, Life is short. Dont be a dick.

Harley's are definitely different. That rigid mounted 1200 Sportster I had would shake off anything it could.

I just noticed youve owned a couple of Sportsters. Ive never worked on one of those but it looks like the filter is a little easier to get to than a big twin, which might explain why you never had this problem with a Sportster. The Sportster filter is sticking out there where you can get your hands on it and get enough leverage to hand tighten it. Am I right about that?
