When T2 came out I loved the sound of the Fatboy Arnold was riding. I rode to my local HD dealer and asked what I needed to have my Softail sound like that. He looked me straight in the eye and without missing a beat said " a 3 million dollar sound stage". Bastard...
A lot depends on what engine you have also. I have the S&S MK 45's on my RKS and found they have a deeper tone when the sound baffles are out, although not all that much louder. The tone seemed to get deeper after the stage 3 kit went in as well. Cubic inches and compression!
I got the Jackpot Hi Roller Slip On Mufflers and the 2/1/2 Stainless Steel Head Pipe on mine. The bike has a nice rumble with them. The videos I've found on line don't do them justice.
Just got back from a test ride of my freshly-installed Kuryakyn Crusher Mellows. I think I've finally found the perfect muffler for me.
I started off with S/E Street Cannons (didn't sound good after I switched to an S&S header). Then I tried Bassani DNT's. Nice deep rumble, sound level started off OK but became too loud after they broke in. Plus my dyno tuner found they were hard to work with - produced a dip in the torque curve from 1800-2300 rpm no matter what he did.
So after listening to some sound clips on YouTube and looking at forum members' reviews I decided to try the Crusher Mellows. Nice deep sound like the DNT's with less dB's. And, they look to be very well made. Not sure who makes these for Kuryakyn, but they did a good job.
They were made by Vance & Hines, and I believe they are discontinued, I got mine for like $209 shipped. Nice pipes, I am running a pair. Having Dresser Duals as well, they do sound off some. Tuned, they do bring on good power running true duals compared to other slip ons I have had
My 2009 Ultra Classic came to me with V&H Monster Ovals slip-ons installed and the SE intake. They're not loud and have a nice, deep rumble to them. Under heavy throttle they get a little louder, but not as loud as most. You can still hear the radio over them without blasting the speakers.Check them out.
Had a guy follow me off the highway to see what i was running, he stated the tone was amazing at 80 mph, multiple compliments and stares when pulling in to HD dealers or events, IMO they are not obnoxious, at least I cant tell from the riders position and completely mellow out cruising at 75-80 MPH. I was hesitant at first to try these, they take a hit on here for loosing low end torque, on my stage 2 CVO i have notice none, I have spent $$$$ looking for the sound i currently have. You wont find anything deeper in tone as these are the king in deepest on the market. I am running CFR'S
I have Bassani DNT on my TriGlide. DNT stands for deep and throaty and they are! Previously I had CFRs on an Ultra Classic and they were also one of the very best sounding pipes on the market. The DNTs are a tad quieter but still have this very unique head turner sound. Go to Youtube and you'll be able to listen to them.
If listening online be sure to use headphones. The sound you are describing can be had with DNT's, Crusher Mellows (not for the M8) or the Magnaflows. I know this because I wanted the same sound. Deep, full sounding, muscle car like and not blatty, hallow or obnoxious. I went with Crusher Mellows on an S&S headpipe and couldn't be happier. I know the newer Crushers are not as good or if they even make them for the M8's. Good Luck!! If I had an M8 I would be looking at the Magnaflows. Good Luck!
