Don't forget that the dealer may tell you that some mods you do to your bike will void your warranty. It isn't the case, but it may make getting a problem fixed under your "warranty" a little more problematic. JMHO. My 2 year ends in October, and I have thought about adding an extended warranty, but I will wait to see how finances are closer to the experation date.
Talked to a guy today at the dealership. 3000 miles on an 07 Ultra, engine started knocking on the Interstate, oil pressure fell to zero. Pulled to the side of the road, had the bike trailered to the dealer. Oil pump failure, dealer ordered a new motor.
Guy was going another 700 miles to his high school reunion. He phoned the 1-800 number and was advised to get a rental car(up to $75/day) and submit the rental car receipts + hotel & meal expenses. He would have had an expensive trip without the ESP.
This falls into the category of - you will see some posts from folks to the effect that they are sure glad they bought the extended warranty because they had a problem and it would have cost them x thousands of $'s had they not had it. What you have to remember is that for each one of those their are thousands of folks who bought the extended warranty and never used it, and you won't hear from them. - but actually worse. The thing that happened to the engine is actually covered under the standard two year warranty. If you want trip interruption insurance or rental coverage it is VERY cheap, buy it thru your insurance or separately.
If you personally feel better buying an ESP plan go for it, everyone needs to do what makes them happy/comfortable. But do not let anyone, and that includes the dealership who I will guarantee are going to hard sell you on these ESP's because they derive HUGE profits from them, convince you that they are a good financial deal for you. They are not!
Well when it comes to extended warranties I always figure that if it is covering something that I can't guarantee I'll be able to afford to fix a few years down the road, and whatever I'm insuring is something I'm not willing to live without, especially when I'm financing it... better to pay a little more now just for the peace of mind that I'm not going to end up where something fails and I'm still making payments on a bike I can't ride and can't afford to fix.
