Galv., the speakers in the helmet is more to what I would like if available. I m in need of a new helmet anyway. The earbuds fall out and I don't need to ride down the road with speaker blairing so everyone else has to hear them. I was asking if there was an alternative to ear buds and full face helmets but seems I got a little flak, so ill just go out and buy the real bad *** things for my bike, like the black-ops titanium reinforced with Kevlar coffee cup holder (with kung-fu grip) everyone has. LOL
I have some JBL wireless Bluetooth ear plugs and a pair of unknown soft rubber corded ear plugs/buds. the wired buds I bring up and around the top of the ear and into the ear canal. The JBL have some form of ear loop that holds the bud a bit more securely. These I hook up to my ipod for trips. Keep the volume comfortable so I can hear outside noises and not blow out my brains with the music.
This is coming from someone who spent 8 years on top of an 8" Howitzer and am currently wearing hearing aids! I truly enjoy this, and have used this set up for 12-14 years now. I still listen to this bikes radio around town and short trips. And this is with both a half helmet and 3/4 helmet.

I don’t think anyone was really giving you flak, but, your don’t like or doesn’t work for me list essentially eliminated most options that would offer good to great sound quality.....leaving you with either buying a 1/2 or 3/4 helmet with speakers built in (which there are a few like the Sena Cavalry helmet) or, adding a set of speakers using a more universal speaker pouch (something like this maybe - Outdoor Tech OT3830 K-ROO Pouch - Universal Helmet Audio Pouch
) either of which gives the option to pick your half helmet and add the speaker pouches and a set of wired or Bluetooth speakers of your choosing.
You could also consider a headset made to work with half helmets, which again allows you to pick your favorite helmet and use with the headset. I am almost certain the Sena headset is also provided with the Harley label as their Boom headset.
Sena EXPAND-02 EXPAND Long-Range Bluetooth Intercom and Stereo Headset
I usually ride with my Taotronics Ear buds that have noise cancelling with different size rubber ends to fit, and the controls are a few inches away from the buds so that it hangs down near the chin strap. With a good fit and noise cancelling, you don't have to crank them up to add to the other noises. Any ear buds that have the controls right there at the buds will never do under a helmet. They will also need a hook over the ear, or inner hooks that fit inside the ear.
Here's the ones I use, and keep extras of them for other things, too.
I, just like you could not stand wearing ear buds, until I tried a set with the soft rubber S, like the ones the GrandPoohBah offers above. The set I have cost $20, but even at $30-$40, they might offer you comfort and tunes on your RK, with any half helmet you choose. Check em out on Amazon.

I put a bit of money into stereos/amps and speakers. Truthfully, if not wearing a half helmet, it seemed like a waste of money. I have been running for years a Sena with my own earbuds [Shure SE846]. They're expensive, but they're awesome. They truly sound the best with my MacBook Pro listening to FLAC audio.
I think a long trip, earbuds are better than speakers, but the earbuds can cause some ear soreness on a loooooong day [think IBA].
The new CVO system seems to be ok. not dynamic sounding, but pretty good.
