It's going to depend on the make/manufacture of the socket(s)....

I have a complete set of Craftsman Industrial sockets in 1/4, 3/8, & 1/2 drives, both SAE & Metric. I also have a couple racks of impact sockets... I could NOT find a socket in my collection that would work properly to drive out the bushings on my old 2012 Limited. They were just a tad too big, or a tad too small....

I then bought a cheap bearing driver set. There was one handle/bearing driver that was close enough to work, but it was just a fraction small. It was starting to penetrate the bushing, by the time I drove both to the end of the hole/tube (whatever you want to call the place they're mounted on the primary). It took a little convincing to get it off the driver once it cleared the the back of the hole.

I then used a bolt, two washers, and a nut to press the new bushings in. I tried to do both at the same time. Because the washer is flat against the bushing, it was hard to keep both bushings square and one tweaked while I was pressing them in. I then installed one at a time, on the second attempt, and it went OK.

When I replaced my 2012 Limited with a 2016 Ultra Classic, the '16 Classic needed the bushings replaced. Being an "I like tools" guy, I went ahead and got the Jim's #5518 Shift Pedal Shaft Bushing Tool.

The Jim's tool fit perfect... drove the old bushingss out in half the time of the generic bearing driver, and their install bits fit into the bushing, allowing for the install of both at the same time, straight in with no issues....

Certainly overpriced, but the tool works perfectly!

I'm wondering if a third bushing installed would help or even if there is room for one ?

I have Craftsman as well. Nothing in SAE or metric was the correct size. Ended up using a Harbor Freight Pittsburg deep metric.

A snowy Sunday up here In Ontario Canada so I took to task of looking for a way for me to kill some time and perhaps fix that rattling shifter I have. Granted there was very little wear in the bushings but at the moment, I don't have 100 bucks for the jims tool not to mention another 30 for the bushings from the HD dealer anyway. I made a simple fix. I took a 1/16 inch flat washer and carefully with a step drill bored out the center to accommodate the pedal shaft. A little bit of lube and into the primary and with the shifter arm bracket on the inside, I installed the allen retainer screw. Was snug going in but the threads bit nicely and I have NO rattle and virtually 0 lateral movement on the whole shifter. Not a factory recommended fix but it works...………….really it does, and shifts nice and smooth with no binding.

one I used was about that size (can't recall specific size), it wasn't something non-standard. I have a bag of misc sockets for abuse work, I picked one from that to use.

I DID put it on a loooong extension, that way if you swing and miss you don't hit the primary cover.

Took a couple pretty firm taps to get them removed, esp if they're rusted etc.

Maybe you can have someone make you an anvil. Here is a copy of plans I found on the Internet.

Exactly why I bought the tool.
