I went with 12's on my sg and thought the were perfect in both comfort and looks. Just barely over the fairing. I'm 5-10. If you like or want your arms up high, go with 14;s or 16's. KN\now any one that has apes on their bike that you can sit on and try? Or dows your dealer have a bike that can switch bars quickly aso you can see which is best for you?
I just put 16's on my Road King and am very pleased with the end result. I'm 5'-10" and my arms are just below shoulder height. Was originally going with 14's but happy I bumped up to the 16's. I was also pleasantly surprised at how comfortable they are and how they feel going down the road.
How do these tall bars feel on a full lock turn?
I have sat on a few and it seems as though you have to stretch to make a hard slow turn.
Straight on they felt great.
I have a set of HD MiniApes I'll sell you, if interested. I think they are 12" height. They only have 2 months use on them so they are just like new. Came off a 2014 Ultra Limited. They just weren't for me. Two suggestions for any apes - make sure you are comfortable with the pullback, and the tip-to-tip measurements in addition to height. PM me if you want the HD part number and are interested. I'll sell cheap to the guy that needs them.

Personally I think ape hangers make the bike easier to control. When Im riding down the road, I can kick back and relax which my arms in a much more comfortable position than the stock bars allow.
To answer your question, when Im slow speed maneuvering, I sit straight up or even a little leaded forward. This is not only the proper position for slow speed maneuvers, watch a police / motorcycle rodeo, but it gives you the reach you need to turn the bars hard over.
Im a tick under 6. And these bars are few inches below my shoulders and about perfect for me. Anything higher would give me numb thumb after an hour or so.
