Default efi problem

my 05 FLHRCI has stage 1 kit and S/E slip-ons. at 2100-2400 rpm it it rough as can be and it also backfires a lot (to me anyway) on downshifts.
have been told by my dealer that (after dyno diagnosis) it runs rich and lean at different rpm's. his suggestion is to install an HD race tuner as that is the best fix. he also stressed that the engine is not being hurt - I wonder about that.
am not convinced $400 for the tuner and 7 hrs. labor (at $60 per) is the only solution.
what about the other alternatives (even vance and hines has one)?

You will get all sorts of opinions. I went with the SERT personally because I plan on upgrading the motor size.

Just do a search on here or check the DIY forum for answers

Also the best tuning for ANY bike is a dyno tune not the basic download map. I don't understand why people are so cheap when it comes to dyno tuning a bike, but yet they want the best. Every bike is built different because of things called tolerances when making parts.

Options:
SERT
HD Fuel Pack
V&Hines Fueler
PCIII

I wanna say 1 more thing, but can't remember

I would stay away from the V&H fuel pack, the support is terrible from what I've heard. You could get the TFI for $160, dial it in and be done for a lot less money than the dealer would charge you. It's not a difficult install or setup.

Check out this forum for comparisons https://www.hdforums.com/forumid_247/tt.htm

and the TFI unit... HERE

seems that I read the TFI unit can be removed and no trace is left on any codes.
am very warranty conscious.
Kuryakyn also has a unit for this purpose. have you seen it?

True what you say about removal.

Have not seen the Kuryakyn unit, but other companies sell the DFO which is the same unit as the TFI, made by the same company (Techlusion) for sale by aftermarket companies. I wouldn't be surprised if theis unit is of similar origin.

I've been very happy with PowerCommanders. They are easy to install and very widely used.

I rented a Road King in Las Vegas over the summer. It had a Stage 1 AC, SE Slip Ons, and I would assume the HD flash. It popped horribly and constantly.

On my Street Glide with Stage 1 AC, PowerCommander, and V&H Basic Slip Ons I do not experience ANY popping at all.

get a PCIII USB and do it all yourself for $300 and 1 hour.

WOW - it is awesome and smooth from 800 rpm to 8000 rpm and 8 to 80MPH!!!

Tweak it as many times as you want - NO CHARGE!!!!!!!!.

Those Harley downloads with labor are a JOKE and a BIG TIME RIPOFF!!!

They told "the download" covers 85% of combinations - BS!!!!

DIY

IMHO

I could not agree more on the Harley Rip off on downloads. My dealer recomended with a flash and said it would work very well with my V+H slipons. I had misfires, early blueing, popping and overall, a crappy running bike.

I questioned the service manager and learned quickly I was screwed. I bought the Powercommander from easternperformance.com for about 270 USD. I installed it in about 30 minutes with a free download from powercommander.com site.

I run much better. Not perfect, but my blueing has stopped entirely. I will have it mapped early next spring.

Go with the Power Commander and forget Harley parts.

I've said this many times and I think TC agrees with me. The HD download is junk.........especially if you are running anything other than hd slip ons. I wouldn't waste my money on the download, I would go straight to the race tuner. My second choice would be the PCIII. I know people with both and with the newer bikes it seems to me that the race tuner works better. Yeah, I know it cost more but the satisfaction of no backfiring or popping and a great running bike is worth it.

Waddya say TC

Terry

P.S. Six hours sounds like alot for tuning the race tuner on a close to stock bike!
