I am doing a service on a carbed 06 Deluxe for a friend. Doing a complete flush of fluids from front to rear because the previous owner had let the bike set for 8yrs. The PO put a new battery in it for her before she picked the bike up and stated that he noticed that the speedo wasn't working. So I pick up a VSS at the dealer and install the new one on the bike per the manuals instructions. As soon as I hook up the negative on the battery the speedo goes from being hung up dead center in the bottom of the gauge to around 3mph or so on the gauge. Take the bike for a spin and the speedo makes one revolution and hangs up dead center at the bottom again. Take negative battery cable off and back on and it resets again and does the same thing over and over. Bike runs and idles fine and the turn signal cancellation works as well as the odometer. Any ideas as to what the culprit may be as this one has me puzzled.
Speedo is probably shot. It happened to my old Road King too. Once I started looking at cost to fix the original speedo I found its just about the same price to put a new on one the bike.

I'm thinking the speedo is the issue as well but unsure about how to test it.
