Default New Tires - Cost OK?

I'm getting new tires put on the 2014 Ultra Limited on April 5th. It will be 2nd set of American Elite tires. Got 18,000 miles out of the 1st set, which I thought was good for me. So my cost for the pair of American Elites, new valve stems, tire weights (if needed), installation, tax and WA state tire fee is $549. Am I getting bent over? We don't have a lot of choice close at hand up here.

Sounds a little high, but might just be regional. I priced a rear American elite last spring, $250 installed in NH.

doesn't sound too awful bad, but like mentioned, just a tad high. the tires alone are gonna run about $400, so with the other incidentals and labor, adding another $150.

look at it this way, if you go oem, it'd probably be close to $700 by the time you got done.

I also like the American Elites--just put on my second set this winter on my 2014 as well...

I do my own, and get them delivered from online retailers to the house. The last set was around $320 after rebate, delivered, as I recall.

So, about $230 additional for markup, mounting, balancing, weights, disposal, tax, state fees, and shop supplies for a set--that's about right.

If you lived closer I'd invite you to just come over and we'd do them at my shop--case of beer is all it would cost you...

All the best,

Shane

Default Rear Tire Cost Breakdown

Here is how the cost breaks down - a good exercise in how we get nickeled and dimed. This is for the rear tire:
Tire - $249
Install - $25
WA Tire Tax -$1
Disposal -$3
Valve stem -$3
Shop supplies -$5
Sales tax -$20

Should of included a tube of vaseline in the damn shop supplies!

Jay Inslee made air expensive in WA.

I recently put Commander II's on my Heritage. Tires/tubes/tire tax/sales tax, balanced and installed for $509.26.

$25 for install? Is that on or off the bike? If it covers removal and install of the rear wheel on the bike, $25 is a steal. A lot of Indy shops will charge $25 to mount a tire on a carry-in wheel.

Not cheap to install tires on a bagger. Some pay $600-800 for a set.

One of my local HD dealerships has free installation if you buy the tire from them. For example, for my bike:

2013 Street Glide OEM front
Dunlop D408F 130/70B18: $214 (full HD msrp)

but that’s with free installation too.

They will also install a tire you bring in, but charge $150 labor in that case. Just their way of trying to get you to buy from them instead of online. One other sister dealership under the same ownership quoted me full msrp plus full labor (about $160). Shop rate: $109 / hour.

Two other area HD dealers were similar. Full msrp plus full labor.

It pays to check around.
