I have a 09 ultra classic, when i start the engine and pull the clutch lever in to put it in gear i can put pressure on the shifter and can feel the shaft still turning, does the clutch need adjusting?
any help will be greatly appreciated
Not arguing that your clutch may need adjusting, but there is going to be some parasitic drag that will keep the input shaft spinning with the clutch pulled in. It's normal. If you're trying to gently ease the shift lever into gear, that parasitic drag will result in some grinding of the gear dogs. These transmissions are meant to be shifted by snapping into gear.
You also might find your primary over full of oil, which will also increase the heck out of clutch drag.
when are you trying to shift into gear? immediately after starting? or are you giving the bike a few seconds for the high idle to come down? give it 15-20 seconds to lower some and it won't grind as much.
Try adjusting the clutch first and then when you start the bike and before dropping it into gear pull the clutch in and hold it for 20 seconds. This beaks the clutch plates loose and allows it to drop into gear with no noise. Also don't try and slowly put it in gear , just pop it in.
Let it warm up a tad.
Shift with authority, but not enough to strip the shifter shaft as some do.
Adjust the clutch. And when you do, only back off 1/2 turn.
I agree with foxtrapper, if you "just do it like you meant it" its shouldn't grind. but I also agree with scratch, when you start up the bike, let it idle for a bit before you put it in gear. I have never found a need for me to start the bike and slam it gear to take off immediately. if I happen to stall the bike (yes it happens to the best of us) I just start the bike in gear and then continue on...
When you putting it into gear you need to be quick. Thinks are still turning in there. If you baby it they will rub teeth instead of full contact. Once in full contact the drag will stop until you let clutch out then it will pull.
