Just picked up a Dunlop American Elite Rear MT90B16 for the Fatboy for $159 + sales tax (and free shipping) from Revzilla. I'll mount and balance it myself using my No-Mar manual tire machine. I decided a few years ago to invest in the tire machine due to both the hassle of finding a place to drop off my tires to get mounted and balanced and the prices charged for doing what I consider a fairly simple job. Plus, I now work on my schedule, clean my rim and more importantly will change my tires earlier since I don't feel I need to keep riding on them till every last bit of tread is used up.

Every place I asked about buying the tire myself and bringing my wheel in to have them mount it, said the exact same thing..."we don't mount or install tires UNLESS you buy the tire from us. It's a liability issue." Not sure what the liability issue is, but one person told me they can't guarantee the work since they don't know where the tire came from. Even the metric dealers will NOT mount a tire you bring in to them. At least not in a 50 mile radius of where I live, anyway.
I'm curious, does the Harley-Davidson dealer accept liability when you bring your motorcycle in for one of their scheduled services (ie. 5K, 10K, 15K, 20K, etc)? One of their tasks is to inspect the tires and they don't know where they were purchased and who installed them?
I bought a set of these tire myself. anybody ride on them yet? How are they? I got 25k out of my stock Harley branded tires. first set got replaced under warranty. I'm taking the tires off the bike myself. I know a guy and gonna try a closer shop to compare prices for the tire swaps. I also picked up a set of bearing but the rear so far seems good still. going on a out west to Seattle road trip in August. thinking preventive maintenance wouldn't be a bad idea. 35k on my 14 street glide. What do you think?

Guess I am lucky. Guy where I live would rather I go buy a tire and he will install it for a fee. Wanted another original dnlop that came with bike but was told because it has a Harley emblem stamped on it I can only get it thru a Harley dealer. Called Dunlop and rep told me that American elite is every bit as good as what Harley is selling with some reports of better handling.
I paid 560 for American Elites same 16 rear size and an 18 for a cvo rim. That price includes dyna beads, new bearings/install for non abs rim, and install of the rider backrest bolt bracket that goes in from under the fender. Dropped it off Saturday, supposed to be ready Monday.. I don't take my bike in for maintenance anywhere so I thought I'd try this new little indy shop a mile down the road.. The dealer wanted 750 to install stock Dunlops on rock rims, so I didn't even mention the other stuff I wanted done.
Thanks to the forum and this thread I found out about the tire rebate. I paid 400 for both tires and a set of rear pads from JP cycles. looked up the rebate and got 40 bucks back. I'll take it.
My indie will mount and balance any tire and wheel I bring him for $20. I still buy alot of other stuff from him so he takes pretty good care of me. $300 plus for a tire and install is just crazy to me, but I'm a COB. Helps to have your own lift.
I bought my American Elites from my HD dealer. I paid $513 after the rebate and my HD dealer installed them at NO ADDITIONAL COST while I waited. Seemed like a very fair deal to me. BTW....I'm very happy with the tires.
