Actually he is not wrong. The majority of HD dealers do not even have a dyno in the shop..

I'm just curious. I know nothing of the newer bikes but do they not do a stage one download direct to the ECM anymore that doesn't require the tuner? You HAVE have to buy the tuner now for that?

Not sure when that went away, but you have to buy the tuner now.

It all started with the release of the 2017's As part of the consent decree handed down by the EPA.

That's crazy. I thought they could still do a download. Another reason for me not to upgrade.

To the OP - Another option is to search for an indy that is knowledgeable with tuning. Again, with the new one's I'm clueless, but my 2013 has a dyno tune direct to the ECM and if the dealer looks at it, to them, it looks like I have stage one download.

My 2008 was tuned with the older version of the Super Tuner. I asked him to tweak the cold start up and he said that when he tried, it was forcing him to update and would have over written my original tune with an EPA compliant tune. May have been BS but he said to fix my cold nature starting, he would have to start over from scratch and go direct to the ECM. I chose to leave it as is for now. It runs great once it's warmed up and I only have the issue in the winter.

Before I spent the money on the HD tuner, I'd talk to an indy that has a Dyno or call someone like fuel moto and ask them about your options that can help you maintain your warranty but get a better tune. That or leave the bike as is for two year or just screw the warranty.

Good luck.

He's wrong about the part where he states the dealers won't even attempt to do a dyno tune with the HD tuner. That's exactly what they use to dyno tune bikes to keep them under warranty. Adjusting fuel maps and AFRs is pretty simple, even with this tuner, and doing a dyno tune is the best way to stay within test parameters for throttle position, speed, and load on the engine, and this is all very possible with the HD branded tuner. It just won't let you go to extreme with the tune to the point that it no longer meets emissions. But like I already said, the returns are minimal for what you spend doing a dyno tune for a stage 1 bike. I don't have any data on how many dealerships do or do not have a dyno on site, but that's a pretty wild claim to say "the majority" of dealerships don't have one. What are you basing that off of?

Concensus is, even at indy shops, that a 3rd party tuner can be detected. I used a FP and then a PV on my 03 Road King. Not chancing voiding 5 years of warranty on my 19 for little to no gain. The 114 has plenty of power for me. I wanted the air cleaner for looks and the cans for a little change in sound. Kept everything HD, but bought them second hand for way less than MSRP. Needed the tuner to calibrate the airflow. I got lucky yesterday and the shop had a cancellation, so went and purchased the tuner and got it installed in less than an hour. Yes, the "service charge" was a little much, but all maintenance and tuner has been done by the same dealership. Shouldn't be any question on warranty.

As long as you're happy that's all that matters. How do you like it after going full stage 1? Notice a difference?

It's moved the throttle into what I would refer to as twitchy. Essentially there is immediate power, so any bump in the road can lead to instant acceleration. This was there before, but more pronounced now. Just need to get used to the power. Acceleration before was already crazy. Keep in mind that I came from an 03 RK with an 88. It's also been sitting since October of last year and I put the parts on other than the tuner over the winter, so my memory may not be the best. With the little bit of riding I did yesterday, my hands hurt when I got home from hanging on too tight.
