Default Engine Light on a 99

I just bought my first Harley. I rind a bit locally, butalso long trips too. I noticed the engine light comes on sporadically. There is no change to the performance and it dosnt do it at any specific time, action or speed. It has 34k on it and I do not know the service history on it. Since this is my first Harley, I am just looking for advice (I am sure I will get pleanty) as what to be careful of and what to check out. I can't drop another $800 for a 30k mile service+parts and labor if anything is really wrong. Then again, I don't want to be blowing an enging.

I am hoping to hear some simple solutions or things to check out.

Well I had the bike in for its 30k service. They discovered a Cracked Front Motor Mount, Worn Steering Head Bearing and [:@]a worn Cam Bearing. Over $2,000 in repairs on a bike with 34k miles Is this typical still for Harley? Are others out there having the same problems? I though things imporved after AMF got out of the picture.

That cam bearing was a service bulletin that had 5 years under warranty. I picked up my99 from the state of Colorado with 39k and had the cam bearing and bad motor mount issue. Just enjoy it and ride on brother.

You should buy a service and electronics manual for the bike.
If your community college offers a non credit course in M/C repair
take it.
Or at least take a basic auto course with instruction on how electronic fuel
injection systems work.
A good instructor will make it as plain as night and day.
when trouble shooting start with the easiest thing first and work towards the hardest.

So you had Motor Mount issues too? Should I replace all the mounts now then? Were they upgraded to prevent failing in the future. Cam Bearing annoys me, not because it went, but because the previous owners never bothered with the recall. Not sure how you can ignore a Major Recall like that. The original owner even had an extended warentee as well.

I've been working on cars and trucks for years. Have no problem tearing into something and fixing it, but when it comest to the engine or computer, I let the professionals do it. I just think that I do not have the proper equipment to work on engines today. Should I be concerned with the Fuel Injectors? If so, what should I keep an eye on.

I knew when getting the Harley that it would not be trouble free, I didnt realize that the '99 was a new model year, My Bad! Well I wll be sure to get very familair with all these issues hear on out.

Service Work completed! Nice to be out riding again. Hopefully these were all the major issues. Plan some long trips on this bike.

Just to let you know, when ever you have the engine light come on like that it is telling you that there is a historic code in the bike that has either not been checked or it has but has not been cleared from the system.

I bought a 99 FLHTCI in 03. It had 20k on it and sporadic engine lights as you described. Last September I traded it in on an 07 Ultra. It had 45k and sporadic engine lights as you described. It ran great every day that I had it. Ride it!

My light came on last fall, off for a while, on for a while, etc.

Dealer pulled the trouble code from the computer that indicated voltage variation. Checked the voltage regulator, which tested OK. Found that both battery terminals were loose, tightened those, sent me out the door.
