So I have been hearing all this stuff about ‘07 6-speeds being geared wrong. It got me to thinking that maybe one of the previous owners of my bike (I am the 3rd) has re-geared it.
I know now that it has had a belt replacement somewhere in its life...but for those that know, what RPM does a stock bike run in 6th gear at 70 mph? My bike is around 2500 rpm.
07 and 08 had the taller gearing. I never minded it on my 08 bike, in fact when I started riding this 11 I wondered why it was revving more...didn't know the gearing was shorter at first.
If you want to be sure, just go count the teeth on your rear sprocket. The front could also be different, of course, but it's harder to count and less likely to have been changed.
The '07 & '08 FLHTC/U 96"were geared the same. 6th gear @ 70mph (2450 rpm) lugged the motor and delivered poor fuel economy, 38-40 mpg, poor passing ability along with a host of other problems associated with lugging a engine. I found on mine, running in 5th at at 70 mph, 2900 rpm the stock 96 performed well. I regularly got 48-52 mpg, pulling hills and passing were great. I didn't use 6th gear until I wanted to run 75 mph or higher.

I have a 2007 FLHTC and now I know why I can only get 38 mpg in 6th gear. I will see about running in 5th for awhile and see what that does to me mileage.
