Default Evo chain tensioner

I have a 1995 Road King, and when riding last weekend the primary chain tensioner kept coming loose. I was going to replace the locknut, and noticed a washer on the back side of the tensioner bracket, and it had worn some of the notches smooth. Why would there be a washer behind the tensioner keeping the notches from interlocking? Did someone install it wrong?

I don't recall a washer there on my 98 evo, common sense says its not supposed to be there. One of the best upgrades I did on my 98 ultra was a hayden primary chain tensioner. Also if i'm not mistaken , all Harley primary chain tensioner bolts/nuts require blue lock tight when reinstalling. If somebody did install that incorrectly it just goes to show you the importance of following directions and or the service manual.

It sounds like something is bad wrong. You ought to pull your outer primary off and check that whole thing out. I would compare what you have to what is shown in the parts book. How did you know to keep tightening up the primary adjuster? If anything got loose in there it's a miracle that primary chain didn't lunch it and lock up the whole shebang.

Are you sure it's not a lock washer to compensate for the smooth surface?
