Had a louder than normal ticking sound coming from front cylinder. So I took off the rockers and when I went to pull out the pushrods the intake one was stuck inside of the lifter. I had to yank pretty hard to get it out.
Any thoughts on what would cause that? They are fairly new S&S lifters and S&S adjustable pushrods.
You mean the length of the adjustable? If so it was 4 complete turns per S&S instructions. Is there a sure fire way to see if it’s bent?
Roll it on a known, flat surface......... you'll be able to tell if it's bent or not....
I'm curious, as I have never heard of a pushrod stuck in a lifter. Was the lifter collapsed? Did you take it apart to see if any internals were broken? Can you tell how it was "stuck" in the lifter?
As far as the pushrod goes, I bought an '01 softail recently with only 9.8K miles. It had a slight tick from the rear cylinder. When I inspected it, I saw the intake push rod cover moving... uh-oh..
Here's what I found..
So a bent pushrod can cause a ticking sound, but I'd guess yours was a failed lifter.... S&S makes good lifters, but hey, even good manufacturers have a few failures now and then..

I recently replaced a new set of S&S performance lifters with less than 3K miles on them because I could not get the front intake to stop ticking and performance issues at higher rpms. I was not sure if it was the lifter or the older used SE adjustable pushrods I installed so I replaced it all with new SE performance lifters and SE taper adjustable pushrods...problem solved. I could not see anything wrong with the pushrods so I believe it was the S&S lifters at fault.

Did you pull the cam cover yet? Why did you remove the rocker cover to take out an adjustable push rod? Just wondering.
I have not removed the cam cover yet, I wanted to remove the rocker covers just to check everything. Plus I think the adjustable pushrods are still easier to remove through rocker then to try to take the lifter cover off. I have never been able to get the pushrods back in that way.
Curious why ask if I remove the cam cover? Should I?
